Zambia stuns Ivory Coast - wins Africa Cup of Union finals 8-7

All speculations and predictions proved wrong as the most favourites Ivory Coast elephants were beaten by humble Zambians in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in the final.

It is Zambia's first Africa Cup of Nation win.

Zambia outplayed their opponents for large parts of the game to complete a sensational tournament which they had started as rank outsiders and beat Ivory Coast 8-7.

Ivory Coast might have won the game inside 90 minutes but captain Didier Drogba skied a 70th-minute penalty well wide.

Africa CUp of Nations Final 2012: Ivory Coast vs Zambia
The Africa Cup of Nations football final is being played tonight at 19:30 GMT at the the Stade de l'Amitie, Libreville.

Of the two teams contesting to crowned, Ivory Coast has better chances over rival Zambia. Both have played finals thrice but haven't won.

Ivory Coast is being dubbed as favourite since it is the top-ranking team of the current tournament and is star studded with presence of Drogba, Yaya Toure, Gervinho and Didier Zokora.

Zambia has a very slim hope to win and some say that even the Zambian players also are aware of it. The Zambians will also be contesting their third finals, after finishing as runners-up in 1974 and 1994.

Probable Starting Lineup:

Zambia: Kennedy Mweene, Davies Nkausu, Joseph Musonda, Hichani Himoonde, Stopilla Sunzu, Nathan Sinkala, Chisamba Lungu, Isaac Chansa, Rainford Kalaba, Chris Katongo, Emmanuel Mayuka

There may be no Pharaohs, Super Eagles or Indomitable Lions at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, but some Elephants, Nile Crocodiles and several underdogs will be there. FRANCE 24 takes a look at what this year’s event means in both Africa and beyond.

Sixteen teams will take part in this year’s three-week-long Africa Cup of Nations, which is co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. The football kicks off on Saturday when Equatorial Guinea take on Libya in the country’s capital Bata.

The final will take place three weeks later on February 20 in Libreville, the capital of neighbouring Gabon. The tournament is set to see plenty of winners and losers but not just on the pitches in Africa.
