France wins both car and motorbike divisions

There was double French delight on the Dakar Rally on Sunday as Stephane Peterhansel won an unprecedented 10th title by winning the cars section and Cyril Despres wrapped up a tight motorbikes category.

Peterhansel, driving a Mini, was previously a three-time car winner and six-time motorcycle champion of the gruelling rally but it was his first victory in the race since it moved to South America in 2009. The Frenchman, who went into the final stage with a 43-minute lead over closest rival Nani Roma of Spain, finished 10th on the 29km special, 3:12 off American Robby Gordon's pace.

Peterhansel covered the 8,400km-long rally, of which more than half were timed specials, between Mar Del Plata in Argentina and Lima in 38hr 54min 46sec, with team-mate Roma at 41:56, and South African Toyota driver Ginel De Villiers at 1.13:25.

McElnea pulls out of 2012 British Superbike season

Rob McElnea has announced his Motorpoint Yamaha team will not take to the grid for next year's British Superbike Championship and will instead have a sabbatical in 2012 and re-evaluate the options for the following season.

The former 500cc GP rider says:

“It has been a tough decision but the right one after a difficult season, where it was frustrating to be unable to secure a good return for our backers in terms of results. We all go to racing to be part of a show and I want to ensure our team performs not only for the fans, but also for our sponsors too,"

Brands' Graham Hill Bend to be modified next winter

Brands Hatch's Graham Hill Bend is to undergo surgery next winter in order to make the corner more challenging and to increase safety by moving barriers and providing extra run off in the right places.

Speaking to Bikesportnews, Motorsport Vision boss Jonathan Palmer said: 

"At the moment, Graham Hill is neither fast enough to be a real challenge on a Superbike or slow enough to be a place for a safe overtake. The plans we have submitted will make the track between Druids and it totally straight and the actual corner a contstant radius left."

Gremlins hamper Camier at Portimao WSBK shakedown test

Crescent Suzuki new recruit Leon Camier had rocky start to his World Superbike testing schedule at Portimao, sacrificing the first day and a half to a front brake caliper problem before being able to post meaningful lap-times Wednesday.

“Unfortunately we had a few issues throughout the test, which can easily happen with new parts and systems, but I must say I really like the initial feel of the bike. The first day was pretty much lost due to the front brake problem and we had some issues with the new electronics – so there is still a lot to try out still with the chassis to find the exactly right set-up for me," said Camier.

Laverty takes top spot on final WSBK test day at Portimao

Factory Aprilia's Eugene Laverty bounced back from a highside yesterday to set the fastest overall time at the Portimao World Superbike test, going a tenth faster than team-mate Max Biaggi today while Leon Haslam slipped back behind Ayrton Badovini.

BSN reports that  former Pramac Ducati MotoGP rider Randy De Puniet has signed to ride in Jorge Martinez's Aprilia-powered CRT MotoGP team for 2012.

De Puniet, who was let go by Pramac, has spent the last three days circulating on an Aprilia RSV4-powered hybrid with carbon brakes and Bridgestone tyres. His best laptime that is known is a 1'41.5 which would have been good enough for fourth on the grid the last time 990s raced at the track.

Edwards rides his CRT MotoGP bike at Jerez

Laverty makes shock switch to Honda for BSB 2012

Michael Laverty has made a shock switch from the Swan Yamaha team and will line up alongside Jon Kirkham in Honda's 2012 British Superbike squad but it is unclear whether HM Plant are still the title sponsors, reports BSN.

GBmoto to contest British Superbikes for 2012

GBmoto have confirmed their plans to move into the 2012 British Superbike Championship Monday with the already-named Tristan Palmer (seen right) on one bike and as-yet-unsigned team-mate on a second machine, reports BSN.

The team had an up and down year in National Superstock 1000 but plan to bounce back and do it in the country's blue riband series next season with team boss Mark Smith-Halverson saying he expects to be running bikes with factory kit on them.

"British superbike veteran Michael Rutter made Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix history Sunday by taking a seventh victory on the famous Guia street circuit, bettering the existing record he had shared with fellow legend Ron Haslam since 2005," reports BSN.

Rutter, aboard the Riders Ducati proved why he is the greatest rider the event has ever known in the 10-lap race, winning by a margin of 4.772 seconds and setting the fastest lap of the race.
