The male cub, which had not been named, was just six days old and was found lying on its back on its mother's chest.

It was the first time the zoo's natural breeding programme had been successful, and the birth had been widely celebrated across Japan.

The cub's parents, Shin Shin and Ri Ri, arrived on loan from China last year. Tokyo pays $1m (£640,000) a year to lease them.
Seven-year-old Shin Shin gave birth just days after being declared pregnant. The arrival was the first in the zoo for more than 20 years.

Rare spotless Cheetah spotted

For the first time in almost a century a spotless cheetah has been spotted

The mythical-like creature was discovered by a British wildlife photographer who set out to find it after several reported sightings.

Guy Combes, originally from Shaftesbury, Dorset, scoured 100,000 acres of land in Kenya using a Land Rover and even a plane before he tracked it down.

Guy, 41, got within 50 yards of the unique creature that had a plain sandy coat of fur with hundreds of small freckles on its back and no sign of black spots.

According to experts, the last recorded sighting of a spotless cheetah was in 1921. And they believe the genetic throwback may actually help the young adult male thrive in the wild as it could be mistaken for a lion.

Woolly Mammoth - a prehistoric elephant in Siberia?

A woolly mammoth has reportedly been seen and videotaped in Siberia, offering irrefutable proof that the giant hairy prehistoric elephants -- believed to have gone extinct thousands of years ago -- still exist.
That is, of course, if this new video shows an actual mammoth crossing a Siberian river. According to The Sun, a government engineer, conducting a survey for a potential new road last summer, saw the beast in question in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug region of Siberia.

Zebra stripes!! To keep biting flies at bay

Why zebras evolved their characteristic black-and-white stripes has been the subject of decades of debate among scientists. Now researchers from Hungary and Sweden claim to have solved the mystery.
The stripes, they say, came about to keep away blood-sucking flies.
They report in the Journal of Experimental Biology that this pattern of narrow stripes makes zebras "unattractive" to the flies.

Toilet paper making for USA threatening wild life habitat in Indonesia

In a report Wednesday, the World Wildlife Fund alleged that a major paper supplier from Indonesia is clearcutting habitat there and targeted a major U.S. distributor to stop buying from that source.
Natural habitat of Indonesian tigers and elephants under threat for making toilet papers for the USA
"We found that two brands sold in the United States ― Paseo and Livi ― are made with paper from Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), which is responsible for more forest destruction in Sumatra than any other single company," the World Wildlife Fund report stated. "Paseo is a retail brand of toilet paper, paper towels, napkins and facial tissue, and it is now the fastest growing brand of toilet paper in the United States, according to its marketer."

The group said elephants have had a "horrible year", with 23 tonnes of ivory seized - representing at least 2,500 dead animals.
It may be added that trade in ivory was banned in 1989 to save elephants from extinction.

Alien 'White Kiwi'

[ via Mail Online ] 27 Dec

Just yesterday, I shared a news about 'white strawberries' - I did not know then that there is more white in the store too till now when I hit this story about 'white kiwi chic.' This rare 'alien' Kiwi chick seems to be betraying its 'All Black' heritage - because his feathers are snow white.

The flightless bird's unusual colouring gave keepers at Pukaha Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre, New Zealand, a white Christmas when it hatched in their nursery.

Both of its parents are believed to have carried a rare and recessive white gene which caused his pure white feathers.

China to release six pandas into wild

[ via Google News ] 22 Dec

Six captive-bred pandas will be freed into an enclosed forest in southwestern China next year in the first mass release of the highly endangered animals, the official Xinhua news agency said Wednesday.
It said the six, aged two to four, had been chosen from 108 captive-bred animals at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and researchers believed the mass release would increase their chances of survival.

A total of 10 pandas have been individually released since 1983, it said, but only two remain in the wild, with the breeding centre taking six back after they lost weight, one found dead and the other also believed to have died.

The information reportedly includes an account of attacks by dingoes on children at Fraser Island in Queensland, including an incident in 2001 in which two dingoes mauled a 9-year-old boy to death.

In a case that divided the nation and inspired the Meryl Streep film A Cry in the Dark, the baby's mother, Lindy Chamberlain, was convicted and jailed for life after a jury refused to believe her claim that a dingo stole her baby from a tent near Uluru, or Ayers Rock, in 1980.

Japanese whaling firm sues US campaigners

[ The Telegraph ] 9 Dec

Japan's whaling authorities said they are suing campaign group the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and its head in the United States in a bid to stop it from interfering in the annual whale hunt.

It is the first time that Japan has attempted legal action abroad against anti-whaling campaigners, who have sometimes used extreme methods against ships involved in the hunt, carried out under rules that allow research whaling.

Sea Shepherd, based in Washington state, regularly sends vessels to harass the whalers. In previous years it has thrown stink bombs onto the decks of the Japanese fleet, while vessels from both sides have repeatedly clashed, the report says.

Earlier, there were claims that Japan was using funds fro tsunami victims for its whaling campaign. Japan has confirmed it planned to use some of the public funds earmarked for quake and tsunami reconstruction to boost security for the hunt.
