Antarctic Marooned 'Tourists' Rescued

The first group of passengers is airlifted out

After a freezing and marooned tour to the Antarctic  the 52 passengers cum tourists have finally been rescued.

They got stranded when their research vessel Akademik Shokalskiy got stuck up into thick Antarctic snow.

They were flown there in groups by a helicopter from a Chinese ice-breaker and all scientists and tourists are now all aboard the ship Aurora Australis.

Coldest place on Earth on Antarctic with below -91C Temperature

The Londoners have been in sever grip of cold wave - but if they are taken to a particular point in Antarctic, they would say they have been living in a heatwave back home.

Yes, the point recently discovered on an Antarctic mountain has a temperatures below -91C.

The newly-found spot - situated along an Antarctic mountain ridge - could freeze a human's eyes, nose and lungs within minutes.  This is because its temperature is almost 13 degrees below the point at which CO2 transforms from a gas into dry ice (-78.5C).

The record-breaking discovery was made by researchers from America's National Snow and Ice Data Centre, according to The Sunday Times.

The -91.2C spot - one of numerous cold places recorded on the mountain ridge - is believed to have been found at heights of more than 12,400ft on a mountain called Dome Fuji.

Stunning 50ft blue ice monolith captured in the Antarctic

At first glance these beautiful images from the Antarctic appear to show 50-ft tall waves that have been instantly frozen as they break.

Some people have posted the pictures online, taken by scientist Tony Travouillon at Dumont D'Urville, with a description claiming they are a tsunami wave which was frozen.

These freezing blue towers were created when ice was compressed and the trapped air bubbles were squeezed out. During the summer the surface ice melts and new ice layers compress on top.

Ocean driving Antarctic ice loss

Most of the ice being lost from Antarctica is going as a result of warm water eating the fringes of the continent, scientists say.

The researchers used a satellite laser to measure the thinning occurring on ice shelves - the floating tongues of ice that jut out from the land.

The team's analysis found the shelves' shrinkage could not be attributed simply to warmer air temperatures. Rather, it is warm water getting under the floating ice to melt it from below.

This is leading to a weakening of the shelves, permitting more and more ice to drain from the continent's interior through tributary glaciers.

Fire destroys Brazil's Antarctic research station

The Brazilian military says two soldiers are missing and one is injured after an explosion at its research station in the Antarctic.

The blast was caused by a fire in a machine room at the Comandante Ferraz base, on King George Island, near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.

The Brazilian navy said the fire had destroyed the entire station, and was still not under control. More than 30 people were evacuated to a Chilean research station nearby.

Ghost Mountains Mystery Solved

The discovery of  Gamburtsev Mountains, of  the size of the European Alps, but totally buried beneath the Antarctic ice since 1950 has made scientists guessing about the mystery shrouding these extraordinary natural features.

A recent survey now suggests the range first formed over a billion years ago,  long before complex life had formed on the planet, when the then continents were drifting together to create a giant landmass known as Rodinia.

The resulting collision pushed up the mountains, and also produced an underlying thick, dense "root" that sat down in the crust. Over the course of hundreds of millions of years, the peaks would have gradually eroded away. Only the cold root would have been preserved.
