Tourists 'forced' to Celebrate Christmas on board stranded ship in Antarctica
But the truth was soon revealed when they got struck into the frozen Antarctica and spent their Christmas out there where there is nothing but frozen snow.
The ship was on a research expedition to commemorate the centenary of Australian geologist Douglas Mawson's exploration of Antarctica.
As last reported, the nearest ship is two days away, 1,500 nautical miles from the tourist boat. So unless some outside help arrives, it is Boxing Day too struck in the frozen world.
Australia's Maritime Safety Authority, which is now controlling the rescue operation, received a distress call early today saying that the vessel was trapped in thick ice and would need help to move.
Until rescue vessels arrive, it will not be known whether the 50 passengers and 20 crew member would have to be taken off the ship and moved out of the area on larger vessels.

Saudi woman set to conquer Antarctica

Sahar Al-Shamrani from the Eastern Province is preparing to be the first Saudi woman to travel to the South Pole, Al-Eqtisadiah newspaper reported Monday.
“The objective of this trip is to contribute in projects to save planet Earth,” she said.
Scientists and environment experts, including British scientist Robert Swan, will accompany Al-Shamrani.
She said she was prompted to take the risk by the words of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah who has always encouraged Saudi women to undertake their role in society.
A woman from the United Arab Emirates, who had taken the trip before, also encouraged her. “I am very concerned with environmental issues and the ecological changes, which started to have their impact on Mother Earth,” she said.
