US assassination drone attacks kill 28 in NW Pakistan

At least 28 people have been killed and several others injured in the latest US assassination drone strikes in northwestern tribal belt of Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan, Press TV reports.

The first attack took place on Friday when the unmanned aircraft targeted a house in North Waziristan region, claiming 9 lives. At least 19 more civilians lost their lives in a second attack in the same volatile region.

Despite the Pakistani government’s repeated calls on Washington to end the drone attacks, the US government continues its strikes on the tribal regions of the country.

Washington claims its drone strikes target militants, although casualty figures clearly indicate that Pakistani civilians are the main victims of the non-UN-sanctioned attacks.

More than 150 people have died in drone attacks in Pakistan’s northwest tribal regions since the beginning of this year.

The late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat may have been assassinated with a lethal dose of the radioactive substance polonium, scientists have claimed.

Was Arafat assassinated by poisoning?

Arafat died in 2004 from a mystery illness, amid theories that he was killed at the hands of Israeli spy agency Mossad.

But a new investigation has concluded that a urine stain on Arafat's underwear had traces of Polonium-210 20 times the dose needed to kill a human, the highly radioactive substance which killed Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko six years ago. 

The 75-year-old's widow, Suha Arafat, has called for her late husband's body to be exhumed after the Al Jazeera investigation found the traces on clothes he wore in his final days.

Plot to assassinate Putin foiled

Russian and Ukrainian security groups have foiled a plan to assassinate Prime Minister Vladimir Putin after Russia's March 4 presidential election, Russia's pro-government Channel One television said today.

The report, which did not quote any named security officials, said Ukrainian special services had detained two people in the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odessa after an explosion at a rented apartment in which one person was killed.

Army general assassinated in Syria

Gunmen assassinated an army general in Damascus Saturday in the first killing of a high ranking military officer in the Syrian capital since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in March, the country's state-run news agency said.

SANA news agency reported that three gunmen opened fire at Brig. Gen. Issa al-Khouli Saturday morning as he left his home in the Damascus neighborhood of Rukn-Eddine. Al-Khouli was a doctor and the chief of a military hospital in the capital.

Assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist sparks deep fury in Tehran

The assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist sparked deep fury in Tehran on Thursday against prime suspect Israel and against the United States, which said it had nothing to do with the murder.

Some hardliner newspapers even called for retaliatory action, with one, Keyhan, saying in an editorial that "assassinations of Israeli officials and military are achievable."

The Iranian government's reaction was just as angry, though more measured.
