BMW recalls more than 1.3millon models over battery problem that could cause a fire

BMW is recalling more than 100,000 cars in the UK  and 367,000 in the US because of a battery problem which could, in extreme cases, cause a fire.

The German car firm said it was recalling 1.3 million cars around the world after the problem came to light through 'continuous testing' and customer complaints.

A BMW spokesman said it was recalling 109,000 5 Series and 6 Series models in the UK because of 'an issue with a battery cable cover which, in a small number of cases, has been incorrectly fitted'.

BMW unveiled a pair of concept cars on November 9 - one a hybrid and one electric, made of light-weight carbon fiber and a see-through glass exterior. The cars are expected to go into production within the next two to three years.

The German automaker gave journalists in New York a sneak peak of its i3 city car and i8 sports car Wednesday. The cars will officially debut at the Los Angeles auto show next week.
