Powerful blast strikes central Damascus

A powerful blast is reported to have struck central Damascus on Thursday, shattering windows and sending a cloud of smoke above the capital as sirens raced to the scene.

There was no immediate word on casualties from the morning explosion.

The blast occurred near the headquarters of the ruling Baath party and the Russian embassy, the Associated Press reported.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blast in the tightly guarded capital, which has been hit by periodic car bombs and other strikes. Some early reports indicated that a car bomb exploded at a government checkpoint but that several blasts may have have occurred. Security checkpoints now are ubiquitous in the Syrian capital.

Bomb kills Syrian three top brass

The attack, the first to target Assad's inner core since a 16-month uprising erupted, came ahead of a showdown between the West and Russia and China over a draft UN resolution calling for sanctions, which was pushed back until Thursday.
