Pakistan Army rescues Canadian-American family held hostage by Taliban for five years

In a dramatic move, Pakistan Army has freed five hostages from the Taliban, which have been missing since five years.

As per news reports, an American woman and her Canadian husband along with their three young children, who were held hostage by militants, believed to be held by the Taliban-allied Haqqani network in Afghanistan for five years, have been freed. 

Caitlan Coleman was five months pregnant when she and her Canadian husband Joshua Boyle were abducted in 2012. The three children were born during the captivity.

An Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said that “through an intelligence-based operation”, the army took custody of the hostages. It said the hostages had been recovered in Kurram tribal area that borders Nangarhar and Paktia provinces in Afghanistan.

Canada displays unique solidarity with Muslims

In a time when US president Donald Trump is hellbent on imposing entry of Muslims from seven Muslim countries - and God knows how many more countries will be added to the banned list, Canada has come forward and his displayed a unique solidarity with the Muslims.

In a rare and moving show of strength, the Canadians of the Quebec city joined hands with their local politicians and the Canadian prime minister Trudeau to show solidarity and sympathy to the Muslims after a terrorist attack on a local mosque.

Trudeau is speech on the occasion said:

"Our country was united. It is an entire country that is joining the families of the victims.  Together, we will rise from this darkness stronger, more unified, than ever before."

Justin Trudeau sworn in as Canada's new prime minister

43 years old former school teacher Justin Trudeau was sworn in Wednesday as Canada's prime minister. He follows the footsteps of his storied father and restoring his nation's liberal identity after almost 10 years of Conservative rule under Stephen Harper.

Justin Trudeau now has the chance to restore his father's Liberal legacy, which has been under siege under Harper.

It may be added for the information that Justin Trudeau is the son of late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who swept to office in 1968 on a wave of support dubbed 'Trudeaumania.'

Canadian judge refuses to hear a woman in hijab

It has been reported by The Telegraph that a judge told a Muslim woman appearing in a Montreal courtroom, Canada that she would not hear her case until she removed her head scarf.

The broadcaster, citing an audio recording it obtained of the proceedings, said Judge Eliana Marengo was heard telling Rania El-Alloul on Tuesday that the courtroom is a secular place, and that she was not suitably dressed.

It may be added that Canadian law does not forbid the wearing of a head scarf in court, only stipulating that attendees wear "suitable dress". And the public display of religious symbols has been hotly debated in the predominantly French-speaking Canadian province in recent years.

Canada train suspects challenge case

Two suspects in a plot to derail a Canadian passenger train have challenged the case against them.

In a Montreal court, Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, said the case against him was based only on "appearances".

A lawyer for Raed Jaser, 35, said he would "defend himself vigorously", outside his hearing in Toronto. Officials said the alleged plot had support from Al-Qaeda in Iran, although there was no sign of state sponsorship.

Canadian authorities said the two suspects were arrested in Montreal and Toronto on Monday.

Mr Jaser is understood to be a United Arab Emirates national of Palestinian origin, though his lawyer points out he is a permanent Canadian resident who has lived there 20 years. Mr Esseghaier is thought to be of Tunisian origin.

Canada recalls diplomats in protest after Palestinians win UN vote

Canada is temporarily recalling its heads of mission to Israel and the West Bank, along with its United Nations representatives in New York and Geneva, to protest the Palestinians' successful bid on Thursday for upgraded status in the UN.

Nine countries voted against the Palestinian Authority's bid to have its status in the UN upgraded to state recognition.(CBC)

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird pledged to "review the full range of its bilateral relationship" with the Palestinian Authority in the wake of the vote in New York City.

Canada was one of nine countries, including the U.S. and Israel, to oppose upgrading the UN observer status of the Palestinian Authority from "entity" to "non-member state."

Canada's West Coast jolted by Massive Earthquake

A massive earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck off the west coast of British Columbia shortly after 8 p.m., Saturday.

According to a report by the Associated Press, the quake latest about 40 seconds and rattled nerves of those living in surrounding areas, but caused little damage.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred near the Queen Charlotte Islands at a depth of about three miles, centered roughly 96 miles south of Masset, British Columbia. It is reportedly one of the largest earthquakes to strike the region in years, and was followed by a 5.8-magnitude aftershock several minutes later.

Imran Khan pulled off flight at Pearson

Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, who has recently been very vocal about US drone attacks inside Pakistan which have killed thousands of innocent civilians specially women and children, was taken off from his flight to New York and taken in for questioning at Toronto Pearson International Airport Friday.

Khan, who was in Brampton Thursday night for a politically-charged speech about turmoil in his homeland, boarded an American Airlines plane from Toronto to New York to speak at another fundraising dinner in Long Island City the same day.

“I was taken off from plane and interrogated by U.S. Immigration in Canada on my views on drones. My stance is known. Drone attacks must stop,” Khan tweeted at 3:35 p.m. Friday.

The questioning reportedly lasted up to an hour before Khan was allowed to board a later 4 p.m. flight to New York.

Khan, who is the founder of Pakistan‘s Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party took part earlier this month in a protest against U.S. drone strikes on his home turf.

First tightrope crossing above the Niagara Falls

Mail Online reports that Nik Wallenda steps out on a 2 in-thick steel  cable to make a 1,800ft journey from the U.S. into Canada right over the gushing fall waters of the Niagara Falls Friday, 15th June.

Wallenda will spend 40 minutes being buffeted by strong winds, blinding spray and, if he’s really unlucky, attacks from the peregrine falcons who nest nearby.

It may be added that the first to cross the gorge: French acrobat and tightrope walker Charles Blondin was the first ever person to cross a section of Niagara Falls on a 1,000 foot long tightrope in 1859, but chose a calmer spot downstream.

Fatal shooting at Toronto mall

One person has been killed and seven others injured in a shooting at Toronto's main central shopping centre, Canadian police have said.

Witnesses described scenes of panic after gunfire broke out in the food court of the Eaton Centre.

"A herd of people were just running toward us, screaming, running, freaking out," said one shopper.

Police said two of the injured were in a critical condition and warned that they were still hunting the shooter. A 13-year-old boy was among those seriously injured. Officials said a 25-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Owner of Tsunami swept Harley-Davidson to Canada found

The owner has been found of a Harley-Davidson that drifted to Canada after being swept out to sea in the 2011 Japanese tsunami.

Details from the motorcycle's licence plate helped to locate Ikuo Yokoyama.

According to CBC News, Mr Yokoyama lost his home and three family members in the tsunami.

The shop that sold the motorcycle to Mr Yokoyama is now hoping to ship the Harley-Davidson back to Japan and restore it.

The motorcycle is among the first items in a wave of debris heading to the west coast of North America. Most of the debris is expected to arrive in 2013.

USA, UK and Canada have imposed a number of fresh sanctions on Iran over its disputed nuclear programme.

The UK says it is cutting all ties with Iranian banks, while Canada is banning exports for the petrochemical, oil and gas industries. As for USA, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke of a "significant ratcheting-up of pressure" on Iran.
