Carrier IQ Denies Wiretap Claims

Carrier IQ, a "mobile service intelligence" provider, has responded to ongoing questions about exactly what types of information its handset monitoring software records, and denied allegations that its software runs afoul of wiretapping regulations.

The Company says:

"While a few individuals have identified that there is a great deal of information available to the Carrier IQ software inside the handset, our software does not record, store, or transmit the contents of SMS messages, email, photographs, audio, or video. For example, we understand whether an SMS was sent accurately, but do not record or transmit the content of the SMS. We know which applications are draining your battery, but do not capture the screen."

Carrier IQ Issue: US Senate also Jumps in

The Carrier IQ news earlier released has moved the US Senate on the issue.

Information Week reports that Carrier IQ has received a letter from the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary. Senator Al Franken drafted the letter as he is chairman of the Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law.

Senator Franken has asked Carrier IQ to respond to a series of questions, and then ever so politely ended the letter with "I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter." Translated into English that means "you need to drop whatever you are doing and respond to this letter or face a Senatorial subpoena."

Controversial Tracker CarrierIQ Found on iPhone

News regarding Carrier IQ, a third-party service loaded on certain smartphones that's capable of tracking users and even recording keystrokes, has been spreading rapidly in the past few days, though the original discovery happened back in March. 

The world is still learning more about what the service specifically does, but the latest news is that references to Carrier IQ were found in Apple's iOS, the operating system used by the iPhone and iPad.
