Chinese PM begins 2-Days Pakistan visit from Today

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrives in Pakistan Wednesday for a two-day visit where he will meet prime minister-elect Nawaz Sharif as the long-time allies look to boost trade ties.

Li, on his first overseas tour as premier, will hold talks with President Asif Ali Zardari and Pakistan's caretaker prime minister on Wednesday before meeting Sharif on Thursday.

It may be added that China is one of the biggest trade partner of Pakistan and the trade between China and Pakistan hit a 12-month figure of $12 billion for the first time last year - up 18 percent on the previous year. The two sides are committed to raising this to $15 billion in the next two to three years.

The visit is also of significant importance since Pakistan's decision to hand over the control of newly developed Gwadar Port on the mouth of the the Persian Gulf, which is expected to provide China a much shorter route for its trade with the Gulf countries.

After Pakistan, Li's tour takes him to Europe, where he will visit Switzerland, with which China is negotiating a free trade agreement, and Germany, its largest European trading partner.

Chinese Premier on first foreign trip from this week including Pakistan

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is to pay official visits to India, Pakistan, Switzerland and Germany next week, his first foreign trip as China's new head of government.

As an important diplomatic tour by the new Chinese leadership, the upcoming trip by Li spans the two continents of Asia and Europe and has sparked intense interests both at home and abroad.

While the visit to other countries a meaningful too, his visit to Pakistan after the May 11 elections assume significant importance as he will be meeting Mr Nawaz Sharif, the likely third time prime minister of Pakistan.

It may be added that China and Pakistan are called "all-weather" partners for their unusual friendship, which makes a solid foundation for an expansion of their decades-old cooperative ties.

"Rain or shine, China-Pakistan relations stand weatherproof," said Jin Yinan, a prominent Chinese military strategist with the National Defense University of the People's Liberation Army.
