Russian invasion of Ukraine: War enters 3rd day

The war between Russia and Ukraine has entered in its 3rd day with tall claims from both sides. Russian forces are around Kyiv and fighting is reported inside the city.

Reports of artillery blasts heard in Kyiv as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns of impending Russian assault on the capital. The residents of capital have been supplied with weapons for self defense and defense of the city.

The assault, anticipated for weeks by the West, amounts to Europe’s most significant ground conflict since World War II. It is unclear how much or little Russian forces have seized or the extent of the casualties.

Russian forces on outskirts of Kyiv

Reportedly, the Russian forces have reached outskirts of capital Kyiv and are embattling the Ukranian forces.

BBC reports that a post on the official Facebook page of the Ukrainian armed forces said forces "continued to resist" Russian forces northwest of the capital.

It added that troops were still holding on to an airfield on the outskirts of the city - which could become a springboard for the Russian army into Kyiv if Russian troops were to seize it.

Russia invades Ukraine

Finally the much speculated war between Russia and Ukraine begins as Russian forces invade Ukraine, reports BBC. Russian forces are said to have breached the border in a number of places, in the north, south and east, including from Belarus. 

In a pre-dawn TV statement Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia did not plan to occupy Ukraine and demanded that its military lay down their arms..

Ukraine said that "Putin has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine". President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that martial law was now being imposed across all of Ukraine.

Israel and Hamas agree Gaza ceasefire

Finally after 11 days of intense hostilities that cost 232 Palestinians in Gaza and 12 lives in Israel, there is an announcement of  a ceasefire by Israel and Hamas, as reported by Al Jazeera on 21 May 2021

Israel’s security cabinet on Thursday said it voted unanimously in favour of a “mutual and unconditional” Gaza truce proposed by mediator Egypt, but added that the hour of implementation had yet to be agreed upon.

The truce is likely to bring an end some of the fiercest fighting since 2014, which has caused widespread destruction in Gaza and halted much of daily life in Israel.

Israeli police shoots a 13 years old Palestinian and then watch him die

In a bizarre incident of cruelty to humanity, Israeli police shot a 13 years old Palestinian boy and then let him die on the footpath.

According to news reports, Ahmad was being chased through the Pisgat Zeev neighborhood in Jerusalem, by a mob of Israeli settlers. When Ahmed came across a group of police and IDF soldiers, the settlers told police that Ahmed had stabbed a settler. Without any attempt to apprehend and detain Ahmed to search for a weapon, police opened fire.

The settler filming the video shouted “Die! Die, you mother fucker, die! Die, you faggot, die! Die, you son of a bitch!” The man shouted the slurs in both Hebrew and Arabic, to make sure Ahmad knew exactly what he was saying.

Geneva II: Iran left out of first round of nations for UN Syria peace talks

While Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has began sending out invitations for the Geneva II talks on the Syrian conflict on Monday, a UN spokesman says that Iran is not among them.

However, the invitations to the talks are subject to approval by the “initiating states,” Russia and the United States.

The Independent has reported that the United States and Russia have not yet agreed on Iran's role in the talks. But the UN spokesman  says the United Nations hopes that can be resolved at a 13 January meeting between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The US has objected to Iran's participation because it hasn't publicly endorsed the principles from an earlier peace conference that called for a transitional government in Syria, and is backing militias, including the Iranian-allied Lebanese Hezbollah group that has aided the troops of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Syria reacts to Israel air strike

Syria threatened Thursday to retaliate for an Israeli air strike, and its ally Iran said the Jewish state would regret the attack.

Syria sent a letter to the U.N. secretary-general stressing the country's "right to defend itself, its territory and sovereignty" and holding Israel and its supporters accountable.

It may be added that U.S. officials have confirmed that Israel launched a rare air strike inside Syria on Wednesday targeting a convoy carrying antiaircraft weapons bound for Hezbollah, the powerful Lebanese militant group allied with Syria and Iran.

A U.S. official said the air strike targeted trucks containing sophisticated Russian-made SA-17 antiaircraft missiles. The trucks were next to the military research facility identified by the Syrians, and the strike hit both the trucks and the facility, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the operation.

NATO to activate Patriot Missiles along Turkey-Syria Border

NATO says its Patriot anti-missile defenses along Syria's border with Turkey will become operational this week.

British Brig. Gen. Gary Deakin said Patriot batteries sent by the United States, Germany and the Netherlands have reached Turkey and are currently being deployed in the south of the country.

"We expect to have an initial operating capability this weekend," Deakin said.

Alliance member Turkey asked NATO in November to urgently deploy the U.S.-made missiles to bolster its defenses to prevent a spillover of Syria's civil war. Syria is believed to have several hundred ballistic surface-to-surface missiles capable of carrying chemical warheads.

Turkey's Patriot Deployment Request 'a provocation'

Turkey's request to NATO for Patriot missiles is 'a new act of provocation', Syrian state television has quoted a foreign ministry official as saying.

Turkey turned to its NATO partners earlier this week to request the deployment of surface-to-air Patriot missiles to protect its troubled border with Syria.

In its first reaction to Turkey's request on Friday, the Syrian foreign ministry accused Ankara of causing 'tension and destruction'.

UN Draft Resolution on Syria Vetoed by Russia and China

Russia and China on Saturday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning the Syrian government's deadly crackdown on protests for the second time.

Thirteen countries voted for the resolution proposed by European and Arab nations to give strong backing to the Arab League's plan to end the crackdown. But Russia and China made a repeat of their rare double veto carried out on October 5 on an earlier condemnation.

Conflict with Pakistan among top potential threats for US in 2012

A conflict with Pakistan, the euro crisis, and a political instability in Saudi Arabia have emerged as top potential threats facing the United States in 2012, an influential think-tank said Friday 9 Dec.

The Council on Foreign Relation’s Center for Preventive Action anonymously surveyed US officials and experts to compile an annual list of the most plausible conflicts for the United States in the new year, says The Express Tribune.

The 2012 list elevated several contingencies to the top tier of risks: a US conflict with Pakistan prompted by an attack or counter-terrorism operation; an intensified euro crisis, which could plunge the United States back into recession; and a Saudi instability, which would threaten global oil supplies.

India to open military hospital outside Tajikistan capital Dushanbe

The Times of India reports that India has decided to establish a 20-bed military field hospital outside the Tajik capital Dushanbe before the coming winters. The hospital would cater to both civilians and Tajik military personnel.

The newspaper is of the opinion that the presence of India near Afghanistan would give India a "firmer presence  in the strategically crucial region, and a better view of Afghanistan" specially after US troop withdrawal and "a desperate scramble by Pakistan to establish strategic depth in the country."

Gaddafi's Tribe reacts to their Clan Head's Assassination

Now that the dust has seemingly settled after the capture of Gaddafi and his son and their subsequent cold blooded assassination, Gaddafi's clan in the city of Sirte has started to express their anger and anguish on the manner Gaddafi was hauled up and subsequently killed.

Hajj Abu Mohammed, a member of Gaddafi's Gaddadfa tribe in Wadi Garif is reported to have said:

"Would you forget if someone killed your son unjustly? No you won't forget. People here will never forget. It will be blood feuds."

He made this statement standing at a spot where locals said the graves of Gaddafi's mother and three other relatives had been emptied and desecrated by enemy fighters during the battle for Sirte that ended eight months of war.
