USA: Child Molester Laughs at Judge - Gets Nearly 600 Years

On Thursday, Richard Carl Heeringa, a 57-year-old Douglas County, Colo. serial child-sex offender, was sentenced to 576 years in prison on 17 counts of sexually assaulting a child, 9news reports.

Heeringa declined to speak during his hearing, but he apparently found the proceedings humorous. According to 7News, Heeringa laughed at Judge Paul King during the sentencing who responded, "If you're laughing now, stay tuned. You deserve every century that I'm going to give you."

Offensive India content removed by Google and Facebook

Facebook and Google say they have complied with an Indian court directive and removed "objectionable" material.

They are among 21 web firms, including Yahoo and Orkut, facing a civil suit in Delhi accusing them of hosting material that may cause communal unrest.

Judges have threatened to block sites that fail to crack down on offensive content, but many firms say it is impossible to pre-filter material.

Haditha case: The tale of brutality that ends with no one jailed

The Marines charged with killing of 24 innocent Iraqi children in 2005 attack on a house in city of Haditha, Iraq have apparently been given no jail sentence as their action was covered under the military's rules of engagement. 

"The Americans killed children who were hiding inside the cupboards or under the beds," said Rafid Abdul Majeed Hadithi, 43, a teacher in the city of Haditha who says he witnessed the 2005 assault by U.S. Marines that took the lives of 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians. "Was this Marine charged with dereliction of duty because he didn't kill more? Is Iraqi blood so cheap?", says a report published in the LA Times.

In the United States, the brutal saga of Haditha — among the dead were seven children, including a toddler, three women, and a 76-year-old man in a wheelchair — may have concluded Monday with Marine Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich's guilty plea to negligent dereliction of duty. A military judge said Tuesday that Wuterich will serve no time in the brig under the terms of his plea bargain.

HSBC under scrutiny for money laundering

HSBC Holdings PLC is under investigation by a U.S. Senate panel in a money-laundering inquiry, the latest step in a long-running U.S. effort to halt shadowy money flows through global banks, according to people familiar with the situation and a company securities filing.

The inquiry being conducted by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations could yield a report and congressional hearing later this spring, these people said. The subcommittee has a history of conducting high-profile hearings that have proved embarrassing for the world's biggest banks, reports Reuters.

Pakistan charges officials of Border Security of Iran with Murder

Pakistan police on Tuesday charged three Iranian border guards with the murder of a Pakistani man shot dead on Sunday in a cross-border attack in the country’s southwest.

The three guards were held late Sunday in southwestern Balochistan province along the Iranian border after they allegedly crossed the frontier and shot at a car, killing a Pakistani national.

Police said they had charged the Iranians following a written complaint from the father of the victim.

“We have registered a murder case against the three Iranians and will present them in court,” said Abdul Malik, officer in charge of the Mazan Sar Mashkail area, where the three were arrested.

Iran, on the other hand, clarified that their border security officials entered Pakistan in pursuit of drug traffickers.

Christmas Day Tragedy: Family of seven murdered while opening gifts

Police in a Dallas suburb dubbed the 'Christmas Capital of Texas' searched for clues on Monday to explain the apparent murder-suicide rampage that left seven people shot dead among unwrapped holiday presents.

The dead -- four women and three men, one of them believed to be the gunman -- were found late Sunday morning in an apartment living room in the town of Grapevine by police answering a voiceless 911 emergency call, authorities said.

Two pistols were recovered from the home, said Sergeant Robert Eberling of the Grapevine police department, who called it a 'gruesome crime scene' and the worst outburst of gun violence in the town's history.

China to crack down on 'black jails'

China's public security bureau has launched a six-month crackdown on so-called black jails operated by private security firms in Beijing.

The Global Times said police uncovered one detention centre in Beijing's Changping District in August. It had been paid for by five local authorities. The police now say that the practice of blocking petitioners will not longer be tolerated.
