Ex cop stages grenade attack from a helicopter on Venezuelan Supreme Court

In a bizarre act, an ex cop is reported to have grenade-attacked the Venezuelan Supreme Court in a move to depose the president.

 Oscar Perez, a former cop turned rogue agent is a pilot, specialist K9 trainer and firearms expert who once starred in a film. Perez says he is a 'patriot' fighting the 'evil' government of Nicolas Maduro.

The Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro branded the attack a 'coup attempt' and 'terrorist attack' before demanding a manhunt for the perpetrators - including Perez.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe orders strengthening of surveillance around disputed islands

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has ordered his defence minister to strengthen surveillance around islands at the heart of a territorial feud with China.

Earlier, the Deputy Foreign Minister summoned the Chinese ambassador to protest against what he called an incursion by four Chinese maritime surveillance ships near the islands.

The ambassador responded by re-iterating his country's claim over the islands, known as Diaoyu in China.

Taiwan Coast Guard and Fishing Boats get 'Water-Cannon Fire' from Japanese Ship

Japanese Coast Guard vessels have fired water cannon to turn away about 40 Taiwan fishing boats and eight Taiwan Coast Guard vessels from waters Japan considers its own.

Japan protested to Taiwan, a day after it lodged a complaint with China over what it said was a similar intrusion by Chinese boats.

Sino-Japanese relations deteriorated sharply this month after Japan bought disputed East China Sea islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, from their private owner, sparking anti-Japan protests across China.

Taiwan has friendly ties with Japan, but the two countries have long squabbled over fishing rights in the area. China and Taiwan both argue they have inherited China’s historic sovereignty over the islands.

Chinese ships enter disputed Senkaku-Diaoyu islands waters

Two Chinese ships have entered waters around Japan-administered islands in the East China Sea, the Japanese coastguard said, as tensions mount over the disputed chain. Tensions escalated dramatically after the Japanese government bought three of them from their private owners.

As of 7.00am, two Chinese maritime surveillance ships were spotted in waters off Kubashima and Uotsurijima, it said, adding that four patrol ships were in "contiguous" waters just outside the territory.

The ships' entry came a day after Beijing postponed a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties with Japan because of the ongoing dispute.

India turns down Pakistan proposal to remove heavy artillery as part of 'CBM'

India has rejected Pakistan’s proposal to move heavy artillery and mortars away from the Line of Control (LoC), citing frequent ceasefire violations, Indian newspaper The Economic Times reported.

Instead, India has also asked Islamabad to come clear on its nuclear policy, including command and control over nuclear assets.

During the talks, Pakistan proposed to redeploy artillery and mortar 30 kilometres away from the LoC among other CBMs that included an agreement on the prevention of incidents at sea and the return of citizens who inadvertently cross the border.

South Korea plans Underwater Observatory on disputed islets by 2017

South Korea plans to build a breakwater, an underwater park and an underwater observatory in waters off South Korea-controlled islets claimed by Japan in the Sea of Japan by mid-2017, a Seoul daily reported Friday.

A 200-meter pass linking the two main islets Dongdo and Seodo will also be constructed to counter Japan's sovereignty claims. The islets are known as Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan.

China navy to carry out Pacific exercises

Chinese Navy is likely to conduct military exercise in the trouble waters of Pacific shortly. The announcement comes at a time when the tension in the area over maritime disputes are at their height.

However, shunning any doubts, the Chinese Defence ministry said the drills were routine and were not targeting any specific country. A Pentagon spokesman has also said the US had no problem with the naval exercises.

China’s Wen warns “outside forces” off South China Sea dispute

"Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Friday that “outside forces” had no excuse to get involved in a complex dispute over the South China Sea, offering a veiled warning to the United States and others not to stick their noses into the sensitive issue," reports Dawn quoting Reuters.

While the White House says U.S. President Barack Obama will bring up the issue at another summit on Saturday, also in Bali, China has said it does not want it discussed, preferring to deal with the problem bilaterally amongst the states directly involved.
