Turkish court orders Facebook to block pages Insulting Prophet Mohammad

It has been reported by Huffington Post, quoting Reters, that a Turkish court has ordered Facebook to block a number of pages deemed insulting to the Prophet Mohammad, threatening to stop access to the whole social networking site if it does not comply.

The order made by the court on Sunday followed a request by a prosecutor, state broadcaster TRT reported. No one from Facebook was immediately available for comment.

The Turkish court order comes after French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo's adamancy to continue publishing derogatory cartoons of Prophet Mohammad, that has already caused murder of 12 people in Paris.

More Americans turning to Twitter and Facebook to 'read' daily news

The social media networks have so much become part of our lives that now people are turning toward these even to update them on daily news rather than the usual newspapers.

A study conducted in USA reveals that 8% Americans get their news from Twitter. People who are younger, more educated and more mobile than the 30% of Americans who get their news on Facebook.

Half of the 16% of U.S. adults who use Twitter get their news on the social network, according to the study, which was published by the Pew Research Centre on Monday, the second in a series of studies analysing the relationship between social media and news.

The study reveals other differences between Twitter and Facebook users in the ways they consume news. On Twitter, 85% of users read the news on mobile devices "at least sometimes," a larger percentage than Facebook users (64%).

Iranian president volunteers to go to space

The Iranian president Ahmadinejad has volunteered to go the space by his country's space programme.

"I am ready to be the first human to be sent to space by Iranian scientists," Ahmadinejad told a group of scientists in Tehran gathered to celebrate the country's space achievements, according to the semi-official Mehr news agency. Ahmadinejad was speaking at an event organised for the anniversary celebration of the 1979 Islamic revolution.

It may be added that Iran recently sent a monkey in space and retrieved it alive back on earth. The Iranian sciencetists hailed as a major step towards their goal of sending humans into space.

It was unclear if the suggestion was a serious one, but one group of Iranians declared they would do everything in their power to help Ahmadinejad achieve his goal.

Within minutes of the news breaking, a Facebook page was set up called "In support of sending Ahmadinejad into space".

Facebook drops below float price

Shares in Facebook closed well below the price at which they were floated amid doubts that the newly-listed company can live up to expectations.

The shares debuted on the Nasdaq stock exchange at $38 each on Friday, but ended 11% down on Monday.
Some analysts said the shares would have fallen on Friday had not underwriters stepped in to buy stock. Critics say Facebook's advisers have set the price too high, although others argue that it is too early to tell.
The company's shares fell about 12% immediately the Nasdaq opened, and hovered around 9%-10% down for most of the day until a late bout of selling.

Facebook Launches Two-Filter ‘Instagram’ on ‘Facebook for Every Phone’

One month after its $1 billion acquisition of Instagram, Facebook has added filters to one of its apps.
Users of Facebook’s app for non-smartphones, “Facebook for Every Phone,” can now tweak their photos with Sepia or Grayscale filters similar to those Instagram offers.
Instagram had nothing to do with the new feature, a Facebook spokesperson told Inside Facebook. Rather, the apps were developed at an employee hackathon.
The New York TImes reported in August 2011 that Facebook was developing a set of filters for its mobile app “with the hopes of drawing off fans of Instagram.”

Facebook to Introduce ‘Lifesaving’ Feature Tuesday

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is scheduled to appear on ABC’s Good Morning America on Tuesday to introduce a feature that “could save lives.”
The program teased the segment by noting that Zuckerberg “doesn’t do much TV” and then asked, “So why is he inviting [GMA news anchor] Robin Roberts to Facebook’s headquarters? What does he want to share that could save lives?”

Facebook reps could not be reached for comment on the announcement. The social networking giant has introduced tools of late that could be described along the same lines. In December, Facebook launched a program called “Lifeline” that let friends alert the company when their friends express suicidal thoughts. In that case, Facebook sends an email to the comment’s author directing them to a telephone hotline or a link they can click to start a confidential chat.

Facebook Buys Instagram

The social network announced Monday that it is buying photo-sharing service Instagram, a two year-old San Francisco-based company that has attracted more than 30 million users, for $1 billion in a cash and stock deal.

The deal marks an attempt by Facebook to maintain dominance in an area that has proved one of its stickiest and most popular features: photo sharing. At the end of last year, Facebook users were uploading more than 250 million photos a day, on average, according to Facebook's filing with the SEC. The social network's members also spend nearly a fifth of their time on the site browsing photos, a 2011 comScore study found.

In an update posted on his Facebook profile, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained that the "talented team" at Instagram will be joining Facebook to help the social network add new features to its photo-sharing offerings.

Facebook picks Nasdaq for marquee listing [Rumor?]

Facebook Inc, preparing what would be Silicon Valley's largest IPO, has picked Nasdaq over the New York Stock Exchange for its listing in a major victory for the technology-laden U.S. bourse, a source familiar with the situation said on Thursday.
One of the most coveted stock listings in recent years, Facebook's choice of its future exchange translates into a relatively small sum in annual listing fees. But it bestows major bragging rights on Nasdaq OMX Group Inc, already home to the likes of Apple Inc and Google Inc.

A spokesman for Facebook declined to comment. Nasdaq OMX and the NYSE also declined to comment.

Yahoo Sues Facebook Over 10 Patents

Yahoo on Monday made good on its promise to sue Facebook, alleging in a complaint that Facebook violated 10 patents.
The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif., makes a case that Yahoo innovated on several fronts, including messaging, news feed generation, social commenting advertising display, preventing click fraud and privacy controls.
“Facebook was not launched until 2004, 10 years after Yahoo was founded,” the complaint reads. “Facebook has since grown to be one of the most widely trafficked sites on the Internet. That growth, however, has been based in a large part on Facebook’s use of Yahoo’s patented technology.”

Facebook IPO Filing Reveals Its Stunning Financial Size

Do you know how big Facebook is? Well for sure we know by the size of its viewers and members, which run into countless millions. But a majority would not know its financial size.

The recent filing of papers for IPO (Initial Public Offering) by Facebook Monday has however let the secret open. What started from a ordinary home, the Facebook has turned into the world's leading and most liked social media network. Anyone using computer is least likely not to be member of Facebook.
And when Facebook seeks to raise $5 billion in an IPO, it should not surprise us for we know its size could have amassed fortunes.

Facebook CEO and co-founder also enjoys the use of a private plane, and earned a base salary of $500,000 last year, more than triple the salary of Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin when Google filed for its IPO.

Facebook was expected to try and raise $10 billion, but IFR says that number has been reduced to $5 billion. The plan is to see how that goes and possibly raise more later.

Anonymous Threatens Facebook Shutdown Jan. 28

Anonymous is planning to target Facebook in an attack Jan. 28 — at least that’s what a video uploaded to YouTube Monday is claiming in the name of the hacker network.

And you thought a day without Wikipedia was bad.
“An online war has begun between Anonymous, the people and the government of the United States,” the video begins. “While SOPA and PIPA may be postponed from Congress, this doesn’t guarantee that our Internet rights will be upheld.”

Think before you "Like" on Facebook

[ via Reuters ] 30 Dec

The Facebook 'Like' Button - something that that has become a social-media arms race among corporations, to see which can amass the greatest number of online followers.

"It's become a real competition between companies to grow the size of that number, and to have more fans than your rivals," says Matt Simpson, marketing director for Phoenix-based Bulbstorm, which develops social-media apps for companies such as NBC and World Wrestling Entertainment.

For instance, if you "Liked" Toys 'R Us before Thanksgiving, you got a shot at a limo ride, a $1,000 shopping spree, and exclusive store access before its doors opened for Black Friday sales.

As a result, in the third quarter of this year, an average of 100 million "Like" buttons were being clicked on Facebook every day. That's double the amount of liking going on, compared with the same period last year.

Corporations are doing this for a reason, of course. They're building marketing lists, they're aiming to boost sales, and they're planting themselves in users' news feeds.
