Fishermen catch terrifying prehistoric shark

In a rare fish catch, a fishing trawler near Lakes Entrance, Victoria has caught a rare prehistoric shark with 300 teeth among their catch.

The terrifying fish meaures up to two metres long and was caught at 700 metres below sea level. It is being opined that the origin of the shark dates back 80 million years and is eel-like in shape. It has 300 teeth over 25 rows, which allows it to swallow its prey whole.

The Daily Mail reports that the dark brown, eel-like looking creature is a frilled shark, also known as the 'living fossil', and was named for its six pairs of frill-like gills along with its dorsal fins, similar to the predatory fish.

New Earth-sized planet found

Astronomers have found a planet only an astronomical stone's throw away, at four light years, raising the chances that there is a habitable planet orbiting in Earth's neighbourhood.

Researchers say the newly discovered planet is too close to its sun to support known forms of life - it has a surface temperature estimated at 1200C. But previous studies suggest that when one planet is discovered orbiting a sun there are usually others in the same system.

The Earth-sized planet, the discovery of which was announced by Stephane Udry and Xavier Dumusque, of the Geneva Observatory, orbits one of the suns in the three-star Centauri system, roughly 40 trillion kilometres away.

Vast African water source found - could last for centuries

A newly discovered water source in Namibia could have a major impact on development in the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa.

Estimates suggest the aquifer could supply the north of the country for 400 years at current rates of consumption.

Scientists say the water is up to 10,000 years old but is cleaner to drink than many modern sources.

However, there are concerns that unauthorised drilling could threaten the new supply.
