Sumatran volcano erupts, shooting lava FOUR MILES into the air [Video]

It is a horrifying site in northern Sumatra as Mount Sinaburg has been erupting since Tuesday and spewing rocks and lava almost four mile up in the air.

Already, More than 5,000 people have fled their homes in western Indonesia in recent days following a series of violent volcanic eruptions.

Although the government has called for people living within 1.9 miles of the volcano to be evacuated, those living beyond the danger zone were also fleeing their homes.

It may be added that Indonesia has dozens of active volcanoes and straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the Ring of Fire between the Pacific and Indian oceans.

Brand New Boeing 737-800 aircraft crashes in water off Bali, Indonesia - however with no fatalities

The shallow waters off the coast of Bali, the dream island in Indonesia, saved those aboard a brand new Boeing 737-800 aircraft to walk away without any fatal injuries or casualties. Upon crash, the aircraft broke into two halves.

Initial reports said the aircraft had overshot the runway. But a Lion Air spokesman, Edward Sirait, told reporters that the plane did not reach the runway, it hit the water first.

All 101 passengers, including three foreiengers, and seven crew members aboard a Lion Air flight were rescued Saturday within minutes of the crash. Some 45 people have been taken to local hospitals with injuries, but none seemed life threatening, according to one Indonesian airport official.

The crash must be a big blow to the tall claims made by the Boeing which boasts that the 737-800 is the best-selling aircraft in the Next Generation series. Boeing says that the aircraft is "known for its reliability, fuel efficiency and economical performance. 

The crashed aircraft had just been commissioned in March.

British woman sentenced to death in Bali for carrying £1.6million worth of cocaine in her suitcase

Lindsay Sandiford, 56 from Britain who was caught carrying £1.6 million worth of cocaine in her suitcase in Bali, Indonesia has been sentenced to death for drug trafficking.

Although pleading guilty, she claimed she was coerced into the crime because her children were threatened. But in its verdict, a judge panel headed by Amser Simanjuntak concluded that Sandiford has damaged the image of Bali as a tourism destination and weakened the government's fight against drugs.

Lindsay Sandiford, from Gloucestershire, was arrested in May last year following a routine customs check by police as she tried to enter Indonesia on a flight from the Thai capital Bangkok with £1.6 million worth of the Class A drug.

State prosecutors had called for the 56-year-old housewife to be jailed for 15 years but there was a gasp in the Bali courtroom when she was told she would be killed for her crime.

Sandiford, originally from Redcar on Teesside, was one of a 'British gang of four’ who were caught and prosecuted after she tried to smuggle £1.6 million of cocaine into the country from Thailand.

The usual sentence for the amount of cocaine found in the lining of her suitcase – 4.8kg – is execution.

Indonesian rescuers find first bodies at jet crash site

Indonesian rescue workers have recovered the first bodies from the mountainous terrain where a Russian superjet crashed on Wednesday, killing all 45 people on board.

The country’s national search and rescue agency said on Friday morning that it had found the bodies of 12 victims.

Most of the dead are Indonesian aviation officials, although eight Russians were also on board.

Rescuers have been battling to scale the near-vertical Mount Salak, a dormant volcano south of Jakarta where the jet came down.

Indonesia earthquake: Tsunami watch in effect for Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka

An 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia on Wednesday, sending residents around the region dashing out of their homes and offices in fear.

US seismologists issued an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami watch but said it appeared to have only generated small waves. Victor Sardina, a geophysicist with the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, told AFP the first tsunami was “not anywhere near” as large as the devastating waves that struck Asia in 2004 and Japan last year.

He said the tsunami measured a mere 35 centimeters (14 inches) near Padang, Indonesia, but could swell to as high as a meter (3 feet 4 inches) near Sri Lanka, adding that US scientists were still carefully monitoring the situation.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a  tsunami watch was also in effect for India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa and other countries.

Strong quake strikes off Sumatra, Indonesia

An undersea earthquake with magnitude of 7.1 rocked northern tip of Sumatra island earlier Wednesday, but no damages or casualty was reported, officials said.

The quake was initially registered at 7.6 in magnitude by the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, but was later downgraded to the magnitude of 7.1. The USGS reported onits website earlier that the quake was at 7.3 magnitude with the depth at 33 km under sea bed.

A tsunami warning had been issued but then the agency lifted it as the danger did notoccur."We lifted the tsunami warning as it did not happen," the official told Xinhua by phone.

Missing Presumed Dead Indonesian Girl in 2004 Tsunami comes home

Today is the day of posting miracle news. Few hours back I shared a post about a young man who was in coma and doctors, who had lost all hopes of his coming back to life, were about to take off his machined life line, when he suddenly opened eyes and came back to life. For his overjoyed mother, it was the best Christmas gift she could ever imagine.

Just now, I came across another miraculous news of a little Indonesian girl who was thought to have perished in the 2004 tsunami that struck Indonesia and other parts of Asia. And quite naturally, her family had lost all hopes of her ever "coming back." But miracle do happen, which brought her home.

Meri Yulanda, was washed away in the powerful waves, but was saved by a woman, who took her home and then forced her into begging forcibly. However, she was let free last week and Meri walked into a cafe in Meulaboh, Aceh, remembering only the name of her grandfather, Ibrahim. When she made a mention of the name, someone at the cafe knew a man by that name.

And that is how she was reunited after seven years with her family.

Dutch Govt Apologizes for 1947 Indonesian Massacre

The Netherlands has officially apologized to relatives of victims killed in Rawagede village during Indonesia’s struggle to keep its independence more than six decades ago. About 430 villagers were killed by the Dutch troops on Dec. 9, 1947.

Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia Tjeerd de Zwaan presided over a tearful ceremony on Friday, attended by hundreds of villagers including surviving widows in their late 80s and early 90s, to issue an official apology from the Dutch state for its responsibility in the Rawagede Massacre.

“Today, we remember your family members who died 64 years ago at the hands of the Dutch military troops. On behalf of Dutch government, I deeply apologize for the tragedy,” Ambassador de Zwaan is quoted as saying.

Boeing bags a Lion's share from Lion Air

Boeing has bagged a "lion's share" in its deal with Lion Air, the biggest private airline of Indonesia. The airline has booked an order of  $21.7 billion with the Boeing for purchase of some 230 short-haul aircraft.

The deal includes an option for another 150 aircraft worth an estimated $14 billion. Boeing claims that the order placed by Lion Air would would be its largest ever "by both dollar volume and total number of airplanes," if finalized.

Rare wild cats found in Indonesia

Indonesia is home to some of the most rare wild cats ever to be found in the world. These cats have been named the Sumatran tiger, clouded leopard, marble cat, golden cat and leopard cat. These wild cats have been found between Sumatra’s Bukit Tigapuluh National Park and a wildlife sanctuary.
