Heatwave Set to Break Australia's 80 year Old Temperature Record

While the snow is falling more than what it did last year in the West, Australia braces itself for the worst heatwave that ever struck it in last 80 years.

As per meteorological estimates, the mercury in Adelaide could reach 45C - close to its 46.1C 80-year-old heat record In Tasmania emergency warnings were issued for six areas as almost 50 fires continued to burn across the state.

Severe weather warnings are also in place for extreme temperatures and high fire danger in Victoria and Tasmania on Friday, while in Western Australia a cyclone could develop off the north coast on Thursday.

Pakistan to issue special coins in Dr Ruth Pfau’s honour

Pakistan government has directed its State Bank to issue special coins in Dr Ruth Pfau’s honour.

The State Bank of Pakistan will issue 50,000 coins worth Rs. 50 in recognition of Dr Pfau who dedicated her life to fighting leprosy in the country.

It may be recalled that Dr Ruth came to Pakistan in the early 1960s and decided to adopt Pakistan as her home and dedicating her life to taking care of leprosy patients. 

She was granted Pakistani citizenship in 1988 and received numerous accolades for her services, including the country’s top civilian awards Hilal-i-Imtiaz and Hilal-i-Pakistan.

She passed away on August 10, 2017 at the age of 87.  Dr Pfau is the second person to be accorded a state funeral in 29 years. The previous state funeral was offered for late philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi in 2016.

Curiosity stirs excitement about life on Mars

Man is always wanted to know whether there is life on other planets like our earth or not - and Mars have always been of the planets of human speculations.

And this time, the analysts reviewing the feedback provided by the NASA's Rover 'Curiosity' have been stirred by the adventures of the hi-tech robot.

Although, the scientists have not disclosed as yet, but they seem to find something that could be exciting. “This data is going to be one for the history books,” Grotzinger told a National Public Radio reporter. “It’s looking really good.”

Like a paleontologist looking for fossilized dinosaur bones, the robot is sifting through the red dirt of the planet’s Gale Crater hunting for a substance that may indicate life once existed on Mars – methane. Methane is an organic compound, which means it’s a building block for life.

The rover has made some concrete findings. Earlier this month, NASA announced the Rover had confirmed human astronauts would be able to survive the radiation levels in Mars’s atmosphere.

Married for 87 years - the longest living couple

Yesterday, 1 November was the wedding day of my deceased parents. If they were alive today, they would have been celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary.

But today I came across a couple who have been married for 87 years and still clinging on to each other with eight children and twenty eight grandchildren.

This longest living couple, 107-year-old Karam and his wife Katari Chand, 100, is proof that happy ever after does exist.

The pair say that the key to success is looking after each other in every way possible: ‘My trick is to make Katari laugh. I like to tell jokes and make her smile. Being funny is my way of being romantic.' says Karam.

A devoted mother hanged herself after becoming 'fixated' by a suicide scene in the film An Officer And A Gentleman, an inquest heard.

Claire Peake, 39, was found dead in her garage by her boyfriend after the pressure of juggling her job as a primary school teacher with looking after her newborn baby became too much.

In the weeks before her death, Claire and partner Stuart Withnall had watched the film in which Officer Candidate Sid Worley, played by actor David Keith, hangs himself in a motel shower cubicle after being rejected by his girlfriend.

Dinosaur flatulence may have warmed Earth

In a major new climate finding, researchers have calculated that dinosaur flatulence could have put enough methane into the atmosphere to warm the planet during the hot, wet Mesozoic era.

Like gigantic, long-necked, prehistoric cows, sauropod dinosaurs roamed widely around the Earth 150 million years ago, scientists reported in the journal Current Biology on Monday.

And just like big cows, their plant digestion was aided by methane-producing microbes.

“A simple mathematical model suggests that the microbes living in sauropod dinosaurs may have produced enough methane to have an important effect on the Mesozoic climate,” researcher Dave Wilkinson of Liverpool John Moores University said in a statement.

World's youngest MCP Aarifa Karim in critical condition

Aarifa Karim, a Pakistani girl from Faisalabad who became the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) in 2004 at the age of nine, is in a critical condition in a hospital in Lahore, Express News reported on Thursday.

Karim’s father told Express News that she had an epileptic attack on December 22 which damaged her heart and her brain.

Doctors said that she is on a ventilator and they might have to unplug her machines as there are hardly any chances of saving her, but they cannot take any decision against the family’s will.

Karim had also earned the Fatima Jinnah gold medal and Salam Pakistan Youth Award in 2005 over her achievement, and was also invited to the Microsoft Headquarters in the US by Bill Gates for being the World’s youngest MCP.

Karim earned her first flight certificate by flying a plane at a flying club in Dubai at the age of 10, and was invited by Microsoft in 2006 to be a key-note speaker at the Tech-Ed Developers Conference, where she was the only Pakistani among over 5,000 developers.

'I'm more likely to be hit by a car than die on duty' - Don't Ever Predict your Death

Awhile ago, in of my blogs, The Fire Within, I shared a story of a 11 years old boy (below left) who penned down his thought of how he was going to die in car accident. And his death came exactly as he had 'seen.'

The two above talked of their deaths and it came the same way

Today, I came across this post of a young British army soldier (above right) whose mother was worried of him going to Afghanistan in coming March. Edward Heal, a 19-year-old trooper in the Kings Royal Hussars and tank gunner, assured his worried mother of 50 that he would rather be killed by a car than dying in Afghanistan.

Edward went out for a drink on Christmas Eve with his stepbrother Sam, 24, at the Bristol pub in Clevedon, Somerset. When coming out, he was hit by the Mazda in Kenn Road, Clevedon at 1.15am on Christmas Day. He was declared dead at the scene.

Happiness is on the Decline: Twitter Study

The average happiness of English-speaking Twitter users peaked in April 2009 and has been on a downward slide ever since then.

The decline has gotten faster in the second half of 2011.

That's according to researchers at the University of Vermont who analyzed tweets from more than 60 million users over the last three years.

Aisam ul Haq 'Qureshi' weds in Lahore

Aisam ul Haq 'Qureshi' , the famous Pakistan tennis star, who made headlines in 2010 for playing the US Open Men's Doubles Final with his Indian partner Rohan Bopanna, gets married in Lahore in a colourful wedding ceremony, Saturday night.

Qureshi was seen beaming in a white sherwani artfully ornamented, weded Faha Makhdoom. The two had made headlines when they got engaged in July earlier this year. Faha Makhdoom, a British citizen, wore a red dress with golden encrustations. She had recently acquired a masters degree in psychotherapy from the University of Greenwich, UK, reports The Express Tribune.

The wedding took place in the Lahore Garrison CLub. The wedding was also attended, besides many other,  by Qureshi's previous tennis partner Rohan Bopanna, who had specially flown in from India.

It may be added that Faha’s father, Dr Muhammad Akmal Makhdum is the son of renowned educationist of Pakistan, professor Muhammad Ajmal, former secretary education, principal of Government College Lahore and vice chancellor Punjab University.

143 die by drinking toxic alcohol in India

At least 143 people are now known to have died after consuming toxic alcohol in India's West Bengal state.

Residents of 12 villages in the South 24 Parganas district fell ill after drinking the alcohol. Dozens more people are being treated in hospital, with fears the death toll could rise. Many died at home, fearing police would take action against them.

It may be added that the trend od drinking cheap toxic alcohol is very common among the poor labour class of Indian downtrodden rural areas.

The West Bengal state government has ordered a criminal investigation into the deaths.

Record low of U.S. adults are married

A record low of 51 percent of U.S. adults are married, and Americans are waiting longer than ever to tie the knot, the Pew Research Center said on Wednesday.

The Washington-based Pew Research Center based its findings on an analysis of U.S. Census data for 2010.

By comparison to the current record low of 51 percent of U.S. adults in married relationships, 72 percent were in wedded unions in 1960, the Pew Center said.

Marriage Rush marks China 'Super Singles Day'

The young couples celebrated it on 11 November as the date contains only the number one, which can mean "bare sticks" in Chinese and refer to bachelors.

Mark and Helen Mullins could not face another freezing winter on the poverty line, according to neighbours

It may be very tragic to read that a British army veteran Mark, 48, and Helen, 59, who had learning difficulties, 'slipped through the net' and were found dead side-by-side in their home being too poor to live on.

The couple were finding it extremely difficult to live on a paltry  £57.50 a week allowance. They had to walk ten miles each week to go to the a soup kitchen to collect free vegetables.
