Thee will be more older women than men by 2050 in India

It is projected that in India, women above the age of 60 will outnumber men in the same age group by 2050 as women tend to live longer, according to a report published by the United Nations Population Fund ( UNFPA) and HelpAge International on 'Ageing in the 21st century: A celebration and a challenge'

Old Women!

This was disclosed at a function organized by HelpAge India, on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons, in Madurai on Monday. The number of centenarians (persons over 100 years) currently ranges between 11,000 and 12,000. The number of older persons is projected to reach 1 billion in less than 10 years, world over.

Birth of Twins in USA swells twofold in last three decades

[ via The Express Tribune ] 8 Jan

The number of twins born in the United States has doubled in the last three decades largely as a result of fertility treatments, with one in 30 infants born in 2009 a twin, Express Tribune reports quoting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“The increases are quite widespread, affecting all age groups and all parts of the country,” said Joyce Martin, a CDC epidemiologist and coauthor of the new study.
More than 137,000 twins were born in the United States in 2009, accounting for one in every 30 babies. That compares to 68,339 twins born in 1980 when just one in 53 infants born was a twin, the CDC said Wednesday.

US Poverty at New High: 16% or 49.1 Million

Full Story: Equal Voice

A record number of Americans — 49.1 million — are poor, based on a new census measure that for the first time takes into account rising medical costs and other expenses, reports Equal Voice quoting the Associated Press.

Broken down by group, Americans 65 or older sustained the largest increases in poverty under the revised formula — nearly doubling to 15.9 percent, or 1 in 6 — because of medical expenses that are not accounted for in the official rate. Those include rising Medicare premiums, deductibles and expenses for prescription drugs.

Seven Billionth Born

Full Story /Photo: Global Post

Danica May Camacho
Danica May Camacho, a baby girl, born to a Manila family, became the 7 billionth human Monday. She was born in a crowded hospital and welcomed with a cake marked "7B Philippines." She was welcomed with photographers' flashes and gifts.

In Bangladesh, authorities named another baby girl the world's seven billionth child. Weighing 2.75 kilos and named Oishee, she arrived a minute after midnight at a hospital in the capital Dhaka. While another newborn girl, Nargis, was hailed as a seven-billionth baby, born at 7:25 AM in the village of Mall in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state.

Isn't it a coincidence that all three three 7-billionth births are baby girls?
