Samsung Unveils Galaxy S4 with Bigger Screen and Wild Features

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S4 (or Galaxy S IV, as it is officially known) with a Bigger Screen and Wild Features at an impressive unveiling event Thursday night in New York.

The Samsung Galaxy S4's largest physical change is its display, a 5-inch monster (up from 4.8 inches on the Galaxy S3), with an improved screen resolution and pixel density. 

Despite being a bit taller and wider than the Galaxy S3, the Galaxy S4 is thinner and weighs three grams less, at 130 grams. The rear camera, too, has been upgraded, from 8 megapixels to 13 megapixels.

The Galaxy S4 will run Android 4.2.2 "Jelly Bean," with Samsung's familiar TouchWiz skin loaded on top.

Apple loses UK copyright appeal against Samsung

Apple lost a British court appeal today against a ruling that Samsung’s Galaxy tablet is not “cool” enough to be confused with the iPad.

The US tech giant had challenged a High Court judgment in July that South Korea’s Samsung did not infringe Apple’s registered design and that consumers were not likely to confuse the rival devices.

A panel of three British judges at the Court of Appeal in London dismissed Apple’s bid to overturn the decision.

“Because this case (and parallel cases in other countries) has generated much publicity, it will avoid confusion to say what this case is about and not about,” Robin Jacob, senior Judge said in the ruling.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini: Smaller Screen, Cheaper Price

Details of Samsung Galaxy S3 MINI are being known after its announcement 11 October.

Samsung Galaxy S III mini features a screen measuring 4 inches diagonally, smaller than the Galaxy S III's 4.8 inch display but the same as Apple's iPhone 5, which was Apple's first upgrade of the iPhone screen size.

Samsung said the mini will be launched in Europe later this month but kept mum on schedules for other countries.

Samsung's German mobile shop lists the mini's price at 399 euros ($516) versus 550 euros ($711) for the cheapest S III.

The mini is powered by the latest version of Android software but does not support faster fourth-generation wireless networks.

Samsung operating profits nearly double

Samsung Electronics Co. forecast another record quarterly operating profit, likely driven by strong sales of high-end smartphones that offset weak semiconductor orders.

The guidance for Samsung’s third quarter earnings showed it was on track to report a record-high profit for a fourth straight quarter, despite legal tussles with Apple Inc. that resulted in a $1 billion compensation judgment in August

Is Samsung Galaxy S3 too big for you? Wait for Samsung Galaxy S3 MINI on October 11

Smartphone buyers who think the Galaxy S3 is too big could see a smaller version launch as early as next week.

An invite sent out by Samsung for an October 11 launch event touts a smaller product on the horizon with the headline "The size may be small" and the subheading "and so small can be big," according to Google Translate. The text from Samsung's German branch is also translated as "that's how big small can be," says TechRadar. However you translate it, Samsung is teasing a big announcement about a small product.

With the iPhone 5, Apple increased the display size to 4 inches from 3.5 inches. So it's unlikely Samsung would go smaller than 4 inches. A 4-inch Galaxy S3 would also pose a challenge to the iPhone 5, especially among users who don't like their smartphones too big.

Samsung wants iPhone 5 added to patent case against Apple

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. says it has filed a motion with a U.S. court to add Apple's iPhone 5 to their ongoing patent battle.

Samsung says it filed the motion Monday with the California court, alleging that Apple's new phone infringes on eight of its patents.

Samsung released a statement Tuesday saying, "We have always preferred to compete in the marketplace with our innovative products, rather than in courtrooms. However, Apple continues to take aggressive legal measures that will limit market competition."

Galaxy S4′s Release Rumors Squashed By Samsung

Amid rumors circulating in the media about a Galaxy S-IV by Samsung, something being portrayed as a Samsung's tit for tat move to counter Apple's iPhone 5, Samsung (via Twitter) has thrashed any such rumours originated from Korean Times and the rest of social media.

Samsung on Twitter has responded with the following message:-

Please note that some media reported speculation that the Galaxy S III subsequent models will be released in a simple rumor; is not true. Fixed I’m not doing anything, why spread these rumors?.

Apple is now after Samsung's Awesome Galaxy S III

Seeking to capitalize on a major legal victory over its rival Samsung Electronics Ltd , Apple Inc has asked a federal court in a separate case to find that four additional Samsung products, including the Galaxy S III, infringe Apple's patents.

In February, Apple alleged that at least 17 Samsung products infringe its patents. In a court filing made in San Jose federal court on Friday, Apple added four more products to the list of allegedly infringing products that have been released beginning in August 2011 and continuing through this month.

Samsung representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Apple's attempt to ban Samsung Android phones pended till December

The judge in the US Apple-Samsung case has set a December date for a hearing in which Apple will argue for the banning of eight or more Samsung Android smartphones.

Lucy Koh will hear Samsung and Apple's arguments on 6 December, she reportedly said late on Tuesday. A hearing had already been set for 20 September, but that will now be taken up by Samsung's attempt to have a ban lifted on its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet.

Koh granted Apple a temporary injunction against the tablet before last week's verdict, but the jury then only found Samsung's smartphones to be infringing on Apple's patents.

As for the meat of that verdict — the $1.05bn in damages that Samsung has to pay Apple for past infringements — Samsung has filed to have that put on hold while the court decides on its appeal.

Apple may ask for banning 8 Samsung smartphones

In the wake of its patent trial victory against Samsung Electronics Co., Apple has given a U.S. federal judge a list of eight Samsung products it wants pulled from store shelves and banned from the U.S. market, including popular Galaxy model smartphones.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh asked for the list after a jury in San Jose last week slammed Samsung with a $1.05 billion US fine, finding that the South Korean technology giant had "willfully" copied Apple's iPhone and iPad in creating and marketing the products. Samsung plans an appeal.

The products Apple wants off the market are all smartphones:

Samsung is now asking for that ban to be lifted after the jury found the computer tablet didn't infringe that particular patent, but it did find it infringed three of Apple's software patents that cover the popular "bounce-back" and pinch-to-zoom features.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet PC looks highly likely to be banned in the U.S. The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Monday accepted part of a request from Apple for a preliminary ban on the sale of four Samsung products -- the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and three smartphone models.

The court accepted Apple's request to ban the Galaxy Tab 10.1 -- one of four tablet PCs Samsung sells in the U.S. -- and returned the case to the district court for a retrial.

But it rejected the call to ban the three smartphones.

Samsung Reveals Galaxy S III

Samsung finally announces the most anticipated Android handset of the year Thursday at an event in London. The phone is the third-generation in a line of popular smartphones created by Samsung.

The phone has a 4.8” touchscreen, 8-megapixel rear-facing and 1.3-inch forward-facing camera, and comes running the latest version of Android — Ice Cream Sandwich. Much like the HTC One X, the camera has zero shutter lag so you can capture photos instantly. The camera is also capable of taking 20 photos at once in burst mode, and a feature called “Best Photo” will pick the best shot out of a group of eight.

The Galaxy S III has a Super AMOLED Plus (1280×720) screen, offering more subpixels than a Super AMOLED screen resulting in improved colors as well as better visibility in bright situations.

Samsung Beats Apple To Become The Top Smartphone Vendor

Despite Apple selling more than 35 Million iPhone devices last quarter, the Korean handset maker Samsung has finally exceeded the number by shipping more than a staggering 42.2 million shipments in the first quarter of this year. Thus, Samsung’s  now boasts nearly a third of the market at 29.1 percent, while Tim Cook’s company commands 24.2 percent share of the market. 

Speaking of which, the other smartphone manufacturers, Nokia came in third place (behind Samsung, Apple) with just 11.9 million smartphones shipped, which a year ago, led the pack with 24.2 million units shipped. RIM came in fourth place with 9.7 million smartphones shipped and HTC came in last place with just 6.9 million.

Samsung Announces Event For Unveiling Of Next-Gen Flagship Phone - Galaxy S III

Samsung has set an announcement date for the followup to the widely popular and critically acclaimed Galaxy S II smartphone. In an invitation sent out to journalists and posted on Facebook, Samsung announced that it would be unveiling "the next Galaxy" on Thursday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in London, England (that's 2 p.m. EST in New York City).

Though Samsung didn't provide any details, we suspect that the device to be unveiled will be called the Galaxy S III, and we've heard rumors of what this device might offer. 

The tech site Boy Genius Report was tipped off about the GS3's 1.5GHz quad-core processor, a 4.8-inch HD screen with 16:9 aspect ratio, 4G LTE, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and 2-megapixel front-facing camera, Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich," and, curiously, a ceramic case.

Sony to sell LCD venture stake to Samsung for $940 million

Sony Corp has agreed to sell its nearly 50 percent stake in an LCD joint venture with Samsung Electronics to the South Korean company for $940 million, as it struggles to reduce huge losses at its TV business.

The seven-year-old venture cut its capital by 15 percent in July and industry sources had said Sony was negotiating an exit, aiming to switch to cheaper outsourcing for flat screens for its TVs while Samsung pushes ahead with next-generation displays.

In November, Sony, the world's third largest flat panel TV maker, warned of a fourth straight year of net losses for the financial year to next March, with its TV unit alone set to lose $2.2 billion on tumbling demand and a surging yen.

No Ice Cream Sandwich for Samsung's Galaxy S and first Galaxy Tab

Samsung on Friday confirmed that yes, the original Galaxy S phone and Galaxy Tab tablet won't receive upgrades to the latest version of Google's Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich.

The disappointing news seemed to be coming after Samsung announced which of its Android devices would get the Ice Cream Sandwich update on Tuesday, while leaving the popular Galaxy S and first-generation Galaxy Tab off the list.

As per Samsung, the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab won't be upgraded because the two devices lack the necessary hardware, namely not having enough RAM and ROM, to power Ice Cream Sandwich after Samsung puts its TouchWiz user interface changes over the top of the software.
