Ex cop stages grenade attack from a helicopter on Venezuelan Supreme Court

In a bizarre act, an ex cop is reported to have grenade-attacked the Venezuelan Supreme Court in a move to depose the president.

 Oscar Perez, a former cop turned rogue agent is a pilot, specialist K9 trainer and firearms expert who once starred in a film. Perez says he is a 'patriot' fighting the 'evil' government of Nicolas Maduro.

The Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro branded the attack a 'coup attempt' and 'terrorist attack' before demanding a manhunt for the perpetrators - including Perez.

British PM forced to put Syria airstrike on hold

While British PM readies for strike - majority in Britain are opposed to it

In the midst of Syrian unrest and US and its ally Britain getting ready for an air strike on Syria, British PM David Cameron was forced to delay plans for immediate military strikes on Syria last night after being warned he faced losing a Commons vote.

At the behest of USA, Cameron battled desperately to get a consensus for a missile attack, but was forced by Ed Miliband and Tory rebels to allow UN inspectors time to report on last week’s chemical weapons atrocity. 

Sanity seem to prevail in Britian as the proposed air strikes will not now be carried out until ‘every effort’ has been made to secure a UN agreement, and even then, direct British involvement would require a second Commons vote.

In the meantime, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged the West to ‘give peace a chance’, saying inspectors in Syria needed more time. However, government sources in Britain last night said Mr Cameron was still determined to get approval for a retaliatory strike on Syria within days.

The controversial decree issued November 22 had put Morsi's decisions beyond judicial review - a high-handed measure fiercely denounced as dictatorial by the opposition. 

Opposition leaders demanded it be rescinded and the referendum be scrapped before they entered into any dialogue with Morsi to calm a crisis which exploded into street clashes this week that left seven people dead and hundreds injured.

The decision to annul the decree came after Egypt's powerful military warned Morsi and the opposition to sit down for talks, otherwise it would take steps to prevent a "disastrous" degradation of the situation.

Syria lashes out Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey

The Syrian regime has accused regional powerhouses Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of trying to destroy the country and vowed it will defeat rebels who have captured large swathes of the commercial hub Aleppo.

Military forces in Aleppo fired tank and artillery shells at neighbourhoods as rebels tried to repel the government air and ground assault.

According to activists, rebels who launched an operation to take over Syria's largest city a week ago are estimated to control between a third and half of Aleppo's neighbourhoods.

Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, on a visit to Iran, criticised Sunni powers in the Middle East, saying Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are supporting a plot hatched by Israel to destroy Syria. The three countries have all been backing rebels trying to overthrow authoritarian President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria crisis: Russia circulates surprise UN resolution

Russia has circulated a UN Security Council resolution aimed at ending the crisis in Syria, in a move that surprised the Western nations.

The draft condemns the violence by both Syria's government and the opposition, but does not mention sanctions.

Western diplomats said the current draft did not fully reflect the gravity of the human rights situation in Syria, but added that they would negotiate on the text. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that "there are some issues in it that we would not be able to support".
