Three women held 'slave' for thirty years rescued in London

One may not believe it that someone out of the Londoners have been keeping three women as slaves for over thirty years.

These women were rescued who were kept in "horrific conditions", reports Freedom Charity.

A Malaysian woman, 69, an Irish woman, 57, and a Briton, 30, were rescued on 25 October, it emerged on Thursday.

In the meanwhile, a 67-year-old man and woman, understood to be married, were arrested in Lambeth and later bailed until January.

Detective Inspector Kevin Hyland, from the Metropolitan Police's human trafficking unit, said: "This is the very early stages of a complicated and sensitive investigation.

"These women are highly traumatised, having been held in servitude for at least 30 years with no real exposure to the outside world, and, trying to find out exactly what has happened over three decades will understandably take some time."

Two-in-one drug hope for osteoporosis sufferers

For the elderly, osteoporosis is a deadly disease which leaves bones so brittle that even a small fall can result into a bone fracture. Every month, 1,150 die prematurely as a result of a hip fractures and half of patients do not regain their independence. At least 120,000 people a year suffer spinal fractures.

However, now there is good news.

Two drugs currently used to treat osteoporosis could produce better results if used in tandem, researchers say.

Using a combination of the drugs, already available on the NHS, resulted in an increase in bone density of up to 5 per cent in just a year, they found.

Most currently available osteoporosis drugs, including denosumab, stop the action of cells that break down bone during the normal process of bone formation. In contrast, teriparatide – also known as Forsteo – stimulates the creation of new bone.

Now a latest trial found women given combination therapy had greater improved bone density than those receiving denosumab alone.

In the study, a team from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston randomly assigned 94 post-menopausal women with osteoporosis to treatment with either teriparatide taken as a daily pill, or a six-monthly jab with denosumab, or both drugs for 12 months.

The researchers measured density changes in lumbar spine, hip bone, and femoral neck using low-dose x-rays and bone biomarkers.

Eight women killed in a US Air Strike in Afghanistan

A U.S. airstrike killed eight Afghan women foraging for fuel on a rural hillside in what is called a  disastrous day for the NATO force in Afghanistan

Four American troops were also gunned down Sunday by Afghan police.

The strike which was in retaliation to Taliban attack on US base, is reported to have cost US more than $150 million  in terms planes and equipment loss, by far the costliest single insurgent attack in 11 years of warfare.

The confluence of events underscored some of the conflict's most damaging trends: an unrelenting tide of "insider" attacks, in which Afghan forces turn their weapons on coalition allies; the daily loss of civilian lives to war's ravages; and the continuing ability of insurgent forces to inflict disproportionate havoc on the far more powerful Western military.

Chinese Astronauts return home from space

Three Chinese astronauts have returned to Earth after China's most complex and longest mission in orbit.

They were hailed as heroes yesterday after taking vital steps in the country's effort to build a space station by 2020.

The 13-day voyage also saw China send a woman into space for the first time, and the nation's leaders celebrated as soon as the crew members emerged from their cramped return capsule smiling and seemingly in good health.

The charred return capsule of the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft, which means Divine Vessel in Chinese, hit the ground in a remote area of northern China and rolled over yesterday morning after an approach slowed by a large parachute.

Cannes lacks women directors

The absence of female directors from the 22-strong competition in Cannes this year is a “great pity”, but reflects a global problem rather than sexism specific to the world’s biggest film festival, jury member Andrea Arnold said on Wednesday.

The British film maker, who has won acclaim in Cannes for “Red Road” and “Fish Tank”, is one of nine jurors who will decide which movie wins the coveted Palme d’Or for best picture at the end of this year’s festival.

The fact that it cannot be a woman — all competition movies this year were directed by men after four women featured in the main lineup in 2011 — has led to accusations of sexism in the French press and further afield.

1 in 4 US women victims of severe violence [ Survey Report ]

While the West blames many third world countries for violence against women, a startling survey carried out by a research group in Atlanta, USA reveals that 1 in 4 women were violently attacked by their husbands or boyfriends.

"It's the first time we've had this kind of estimate" on the prevalence of intimate partner violence, said Linda Degutis of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

One expert called the new report's estimate on rape and attempted rape "extremely high" — with 1 in 5 women saying they were victims. About half of those cases involved intimate partners. No documentation was sought to verify the women's claims, which were made anonymously. But advocates say the new rape numbers are plausible.

As many as 29 million women say they have suffered severe and frightening physical violence from a boyfriend, spouse or other intimate partner. That includes being choked, beaten, stabbed, shot, punched, slammed against something or hurt by hair-pulling.
