Commonly known as Dr A Q Khan established the research laboratories for the enrichment of uranium at Kahuta near Islamabad in the late 70s on the invitation of the then prime minister of Pakistan Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto. The prgramme was later pursued vigorously by General Zia ul Haq and Pakistan had attained the capability to explode a nuclear device as early as 1983-84.
Prompted by Indian nuclear explosions, Pakistan also went ahead and experimented its nuclear devices on 28th May 1998.
Dr Khan had been twice awarded with the highest national award Nishan e Imtiaz and was held in high esteem by the people of Pakistan. A large number of people turned up for his funeral to pay homage to the man who mad Pakistan a nuclear state.
