New Zealand could be struck by devastating 9.0 earthquakes

A long dormant earthquake faultline that has come alive could have devastating effect on New Zealand and can reduce it to rubbles within minutes.

Geologists warn that with the movement of Hikurangi subduction zone, an earthquake to the tune of 9.0 magnitude may result into a deadly tsunami that may not give a few minutes for the residents to flee to safety.

The trench runs offshore from the top of the South Island to Gisborne in the north. Scientists claim the 2011 Japan earthquake is a similar example of destruction.

Pakistan jolted again with 6.2-magnitude earthquake

Pakistan and Afghanistan were jolted yet again with 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit late Friday night. 

The earthquake was felt throughout Pakistan with its epicentre 51 miles (82 km) southeast of the town of Feyzabad, capital of the Afghan province of Badakhshan at a depth of 126.5 miles (203 km).

The recent tremors came just two months after when more than 300 people were killed by a quake of magnitude-7.5 in the same mountainous region on 26 October.

Powerful earthquake jolts Pakistan and Afghanistan

A powerful earthquake jolted Pakistan and Afghanistan around 2:09 PM Pakistan Standard Time today, 26 October 2015. The quake measured 8.1 on the Richter scale and had its epicentre 82 km southeast of Feyzabad in a remote area of Afghanistan in the Hindu Kush mountain range and 196 km deep. Due to its depth that a major 2005 like disaster was averted.

The USGS initially measured the quake’s intensity at 7.7 then revised it down to 7.6 and later to 7.5. Pakistan Met Dept has reported the earthquake as 8.1 on the Richter scale. The epicentre is just a few hundred kilometres from the site of a 7.6 magnitude quake that struck in October 2005, killing more than 75,000 people and displacing some 3.5 million more, although that quake was much shallower.

There have been reports of 140 death in Pakistan so far, Express News reports. Pakistan Army has mobilised its troops for speedy evacuation of people from affected areas and provide them shelter and first aid.

In the aftermath of a powerful earthquake that struck Pakistan and Afghanistan, Google has launched a person finder allowing individuals to post and search for their families, while Facebook activated its safety check feature designed to check if people in the earthquake-affected areas were safe.

Warehouse blast rocks Chinese city of Tianjin

Some took it as a massive earthquake or a fall of some meteor from the sky - but the blast in the Chinese city of Tianjin was so devastating that its has left 44 dead and much more injured.

Graphs from a seismic station 20 miles from the blast zone in Tianjin shows how the explosions registered 2.3 and 2.9 on the Richter scale

Two enormous blasts erupted in warehouse shipment of explosives at about 11.30pm local time, with blast felt miles away.

The blasts detonated with such force they registered on the Richter scale and were visible from space, sending terrified residents running from their homes fearing there had been earthquake, reports Mail Online.

Nepal rocked again by Magnitude 7.3 quake

 

Nepal which is still recovering from the deadly quake that hit the country a while ago is rocked again by a Magnitude 7.3 quake Tuesday today.

The quake struck at 12:35 pm local time in the Himalayan nation some 76 kilometres east of Kathmandu.

The tremors in Kathmandu lasted close to a minute according to an AFP correspondent in the city, with the ground swaying. Sirens could be heard soon afterwards although there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Rumors and fake messages of a impending disaster spreading after Nepal earthquake

After the catastrophic earthquake in Nepal that left thousands dead and millions homeless, false news and videos are in circulation to mislead people and create unrest in people living in neighbouring countries.

A message falsely attributed to NASA (shown above) and the Indian government warned of earthquakes of higher intensity at specified times and spread panic. In Patna, the capital of Bihar state which reported the most earthquake-related casualties in India, worried people came out on the streets.

A video showing waves of water rising in a swimming pool of a hotel is in fact an old footage of earthquake that struck Mexico in 2010.

Another video uploaded online also includes a footage from a building collapse in Egypt. A photograph showing schoolchildren huddled under desks in a classroom was also taken during an earthquake drill in 2013.

Over 348 dead in Pakistan Earthquake

A powerful earthquake that rocked many parts of Balochistan and Sindh provinces of Pakistan on Monday, has left more than 348 people dead with more than 500 people injured..

The earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit the generally inhabited areas of Balochistan where people live in mud houses, which obviously could not sustain the powerful jolt. 

The massive quake was centred in Awaran district, one of the poorest in Pakistan's most impoverished province, Balochistan. The area's medical infrastructure has struggled to care for the hundreds of injured who were crushed beneath mud brick houses when the quake struck. 

Pakistan Army and the Frontier Corps personnel are busy round the clock to provide shelters and remove dead and injured form the rubble of the collapsed houses.

Tuesday evening's earthquake was so violent, that it has created a new small island from the sea floor. The new island has appeared off the coast of Gwadar in the Arabian Sea, and is estimated to be about 30 meters long and around 10 meters high.

7.0-magnitude quake strikes near Northern Mariana Islands

It hass been reported that a deep 7.0-magnitude quake struck near Northern Mariana Islands in the western Pacific on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake hit 42 kilometres (26 miles) west of Agrihan and 395 kilometres north of the main island Saipan, but it was at a depth of 603 kilometres and seismologists said it was too deep to cause any impact.

No damage is likely as there hardly is any population around the area.

Breaking News: Earthquake rocks Pakistan

Just now while sitting on my computer (1 May 12:00 PST), my computer really shook seemingly by a powerful earthquake. 

It has just been reported that the earthquake measured 5.8 on Richter scale and had its epicentre some 88 kilometres from Jammu at a depth of 10 feet.

It may be added that a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hits near Iran-Pakistan border on 16th April, which killed more than thirty and injuring many and destroying countless mud huts in the Mushekl area of Balochistan province.

7.0-magnitude earthquake hits SW China's Sichuan

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit Lushan county of Ya'an city in southwest China's Sichuan Province at 8:02 a.m. Saturday Beijing Time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The epicenter, with a depth of 13 km, was monitored at 30.3 degrees north latitude and 103.0 degrees east longitude. As per initial reports, 56 people are reported dead and about 600 injured, reports VOA.

The quake was strongly felt by residents in Sichuan's capital city of Chengdu, which is about 140 kilometers from Ya'an.

A resident in Chengdu, who was on the 13th floor of a building when the quake occurred, said he felt the building shaking for about 20 seconds and he saw tiles fall off nearby buildings.

Pakistani troops salvage and rescue quake victims near Iran border

Soon after the tremors were felt, Pakistan army dispatched its medical teams and salvage parties through helicopters to quake hit areas near Iran border.

The 7.8-magnitude quake, the most powerful to hit Iran for more than 50 years, caused 35 deaths in Pakistan's Balochistan province.

The Mashkel district of Balochistan, Pakistan has been badly hit.

Tuesday's earthquake was about 180 times stronger in energy release than a 6.3-magnitude quake that struck on 10 April near the nuclear plant at Bushehr in south-western Iran. That quake killed at least 37 people and wounded 850.

Scientists say earthquakes in south-eastern Iran are triggered by the clash between the Arabia and Eurasia tectonic plates, the former of which is pushing north at a rate of several centimetres each year.

Earthquake Shakes many countries around Globe: Hundreds feared dead in Iran - 5 in Pakistan

Strong earthquake shocks have been felt from Iran - Pakistan - India and even Papua and New Guinea at 10.44 UTC.

The earthquake struck in the province of Sistan Baluchistan at about 15:14 local time (10:44 GMT), close to the cities of Khash, which has a population of nearly 180,000, and Saravan, where 250,000 live.

The tremor measured 7.8 on Richter scale that struck Iran, near the border with Pakistan, at 10:44 GMT on Tuesday at a depth of 73 miles The U.S. Geological survey said. The epicentre of the quake was near the south-east city of Khash, close to the Pakistani border.

The quake in southwest Iran brought down homes across the border in Pakistan on Tuesday, killing at least five people, reportedly three women and two children, and wounding others in a remote community, a hospital official said.

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said.

5.9-magnitude quake hits Afghanistan and Pakistan

A moderate 5.9-magnitude earthquake shook Afghanistan and Pakistan on Thursday, with tremors felt in Kabul and Islamabad, but officials said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, reports Business Recorder quoting AFP.

The epicentre was on the Afghan-Tajikistan border at a depth of 225 kilometres (140 miles), senior Pakistani meteorological official Hazrat Mir told AFP.

The quake was felt across northwestern Pakistan, Islamabad and in parts of Pakistan's central Punjab province, he said.

The US Geological Survey measured the quake at a magnitude of 5.4 in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.

7.3 magnitude quake rocks Japan

A strong earthquake struck Friday off the coast of northeastern Japan in the same region that was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. Quake was also felt in the capital Tokyo as buildings swayed violently. The bullet train service was also suspended in the northern Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3, struck in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Miyagi prefecture

A city in the region reported that a small tsunami had hit, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.  The Tsunami could be as high as six feet.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 and struck in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Miyagi prefecture at 5:18 p.m local time. 

There have been no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

Canada's West Coast jolted by Massive Earthquake

A massive earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck off the west coast of British Columbia shortly after 8 p.m., Saturday.

According to a report by the Associated Press, the quake latest about 40 seconds and rattled nerves of those living in surrounding areas, but caused little damage.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred near the Queen Charlotte Islands at a depth of about three miles, centered roughly 96 miles south of Masset, British Columbia. It is reportedly one of the largest earthquakes to strike the region in years, and was followed by a 5.8-magnitude aftershock several minutes later.

New Zealand's Mount Tongariro erupts after more than a century

A MINOR earthquake has scientists closely monitoring a New Zealand volcano that erupted for the first time in more than a century Tuesday.

The steam-triggered eruption late Monday of Mount Tongariro on New Zealand's North Island sent boulders flying, covered surrounding areas in ash and disrupted domestic flights.

Scientists were able to fly over the area for the first time today. Volcanologist Steve Sherburn says it appears the eruption blew three new holes in the north side of the mountain, including one about the size of a house. He says it's not yet clear what to expect next from the volcano, which continues to vent steam.

A brave anchor who continued to broadcast even when the studio was rocked by 6.5 magnitude earthquake 

The 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Chile early Tuesday morning but was powerful enough to make news reader Cristian Pinto grip the sides of his desk as he broadcast the news from Santiago.

The tremors were felt for over a minute but there were few reports of physical damage from the quake.

Indonesia earthquake: Tsunami watch in effect for Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka

An 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia on Wednesday, sending residents around the region dashing out of their homes and offices in fear.

US seismologists issued an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami watch but said it appeared to have only generated small waves. Victor Sardina, a geophysicist with the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, told AFP the first tsunami was “not anywhere near” as large as the devastating waves that struck Asia in 2004 and Japan last year.

He said the tsunami measured a mere 35 centimeters (14 inches) near Padang, Indonesia, but could swell to as high as a meter (3 feet 4 inches) near Sri Lanka, adding that US scientists were still carefully monitoring the situation.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a  tsunami watch was also in effect for India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa and other countries.

Strong quake strikes off Sumatra, Indonesia

An undersea earthquake with magnitude of 7.1 rocked northern tip of Sumatra island earlier Wednesday, but no damages or casualty was reported, officials said.

The quake was initially registered at 7.6 in magnitude by the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, but was later downgraded to the magnitude of 7.1. The USGS reported onits website earlier that the quake was at 7.3 magnitude with the depth at 33 km under sea bed.

A tsunami warning had been issued but then the agency lifted it as the danger did notoccur."We lifted the tsunami warning as it did not happen," the official told Xinhua by phone.

Costly Seismic Surveys May Limit Fracking Earthquakes

A thorough seismic survey to assess tracts of rock below where oil and gas drilling fluid is disposed of could help detect quake prone areas - Only, it costs about $10 million a pop.

"If we knew what was in the earth we could perfectly mitigate the risk of earthquakes," said Austin Holland, seismologist at the Oklahoma Geological Survey. "That is something that we don't have enough science to establish yet."

However, some experts say the quakes do not necessarily appear to be caused during the process of fracking, a controversial extraction technique that involves injecting chemical-laced water and sand into shale rock to release oil and gas.
