Geologists warn that with the movement of Hikurangi subduction zone, an earthquake to the tune of 9.0 magnitude may result into a deadly tsunami that may not give a few minutes for the residents to flee to safety.
The trench runs offshore from the top of the South Island to Gisborne in the north. Scientists claim the 2011 Japan earthquake is a similar example of destruction.
