Prince Nayef Appointed Crown Prince

As expected by many, Interior Minister Prince Nayef has been named the new crown prince by Saudi monarch Abdullah Friday, after the death of Prince Sultan. The brief royal statement read, "We chose His Royal Highness Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz as crown prince."

Prince Nayef, in his 70s, has been appointed after King Abdullah took his choice to a royal family body called the Allegiance Council. It was the first time the council had been involved in the appointment of a new crown prince, a move that analysts had said would help to regulate an opaque system of succession.
