M.M.Almam - hero of 1965 War - passes away

It is with great sadness we learn that hero of the 1965 war Squadron Leader (later Air Commodore) Mohammad Mahmood Alam, SJ and Bar, passed away after protracted illness in Karachi Monday today. إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ

He was 78 years old.

A Pakistan Air Force spokesman said in a statement here that the Chief of the Air Staff, on behalf of all ranks of Pakistan Air Force, announced with great grief and sorrow that:

‘Our national hero, world famous fighter pilot and a legend of the 1965 war, Air Commodore (Retired) Muhammad Mahmood Alam breathed his last this morning in Karachi after a prolonged illness’.

‘Our hero left us to make his final flight to the eternal destination.Personality, character and sacrifices of this brave Pakistani are beyond any word of description’. ‘May Allah grant him eternal peace, Ameen.'

Squadron Leader M.M. Alam rose to fame when he shot down five Indian aircraft within a short span of 30 seconds and was awarded Sitara-e-Jurrat and Bar for his gallant act of extreme devotion to the duty and professional excellence. 

A road in the posh Gulberg area of Lahore is since long attributed to the now deceased legend.
