Berlin film festival: Chinese films wins best film award

Black Coal - Thin Ice: The Chinese film 'Bai Ri Yan Huo' won the Golden Bear award for the best film at the  Berlin international film festival.

"It's really hard to believe this dream has come true," a stunned Diao Yinan, director of the winning film, told the festival audience. And he deserves to be proud of his achievement as the film won the best picture award from a total of 400 films screened during the festival, 23 of them in the competition category.

Bai Ri Yan Huo features an overweight detective, played by Liao Fan, on the trail of a serial killer.

Last year, the main prize was awarded to the Romanian film Child's Pose.

Berlin film fest focuses on year of change

The curtain went up on the Berlin Film Festival Thursday with a lavish period drama telling the story of the French Revolution through the eyes of Maria Antoinette's servants, launching the 10-day Berlinale. The festival that started February 9, will continue to till 19 Feb later this month.

Leading German-born director Werner Herzog also returns to Berlin this year with a four-part documentary portraying prisoners waiting on death row in the US.

Among the festival's main competition films this year is Canadian director Kim Nguyen's Rebelle (War Witch), which follows the often traumatic life of a 14-year-old girl soldier in Africa who is carrying a child.

Now in its 62nd year, the Berlinale will also present movies from Japanese directors exploring the aftermath of their nation's devastating earthquake and tsunami in March.
