Qualcomm, Intel, Xilinx, Broadcom break trade ties with Huawei

Following suit of Google, few other major American companies like American chip makers Qualcomm, Broadcom, Xilinx, and Intel have announced that they will cede to the executive order by the U.S. government and limit supplies to Huawei.

This addition of US major manufacturers will now add more problems to the Chinese smartphone maker, which is heavily dependent on U.S. semiconductor products.

If no solution is found sooner than before, Huawei may soon be in real trouble.

Two Israeli F-16s shot down by Yemen

Two F-16s that have reportedly been shot down by the Yemen air defence system with Saudi markings - but such aircraft have never been supplied to Saudi Arabia by the USA.

Instead the lot from which the downed F-16s belonged was the one supplied to Israel probably one of the 50 surplus US F16 A models given to Israel during the Clinton administration.

Another view point is that these may from the lot of recently surplus ex-NATO aircraft either from Italy or Portugal.

It is also reported that one of the two F16s was shot down by an updated BUK system supplied by Russia — Yemen is well-equipped with modern Russian weaponry including MiG-29s and advanced air-defense systems, a fact that has clearly been overlooked by the Saudis and their Israeli allies.

Pakistan does not abandon friends: Says Nawaz Sharif

Pakistan has been caught in a situation where abandoning friends and strategic partners vis-a-vis participating in another war while its troops are already trying to rid the country of militants.

The Pakistani stand on Yemen has however created some uneasiness in the Arab countries, which even resulted in a strong statement by a minister from UAE saying Pakistan will have to pay a heavy price for not siding with Arabs and having a soft corner for Iran.

Scroll down for video of PM's statement

In order to clear the dust, Pakistan's prime minister Nawaz Sharif today urged a peaceful solution to the Yemen crisis through dialogue with warring factions and reiterated the importance of the Saudi Kingdom as a ‘strategic ally’.

It may be addeed that Pakistan's Parliament on Friday passed a resolution backing the government's commitment to protect Saudi Arabia's territory from Houthi rebels, but declined Riyadh's request for Pakistani troops, ships and warplanes inside Yemen.

Obama warns of default danger amid US Shutdown

Amid the US wide shut down, the American President Obama has warned that Wall Street should be concerned that a conservative faction of Republicans is willing to allow the country to default on its debt.

It may be recalled that the US government has been partially closed after Congress failed to agree a budget. If corrective measures are not timely applied and unless  the debt ceiling is raised, there is a likelihood that the country will  and will run out of cash on 17 October.

Already, the shut-down has left more than 700,000 employees on unpaid leave and closed national parks, tourist sites, government websites, office buildings, and more.

Bersani Fails to Form Coalition

Pier Luigi Bersani, Italy's Centre-left leader , has seemingly failed to find a way out of Italy's intractable political crisis.

It seems now that President Giorgio Napolitano may try to find the solution in a technocrat prime minister..

Bersani reported back to Napolitano on Thursday night after being given a mandate almost a week ago to see if there was a way to form a government after an inconclusive election in February which plunged Italy into deadlock.

A spokesman for Bersani's Democratic Party (PD) said he had not given up of forming a government but the centre-right People of Freedom (PDL) party poured scorn on the centre-left leader and said he had wasted a month in a fruitless search for support.

It may be noted that the lack of a government in Italy has increased concern that the slump will only get deeper.

Forty-seven Palestinians, about half of them civilians, including 12 children, have been killed in Israel's raids, Palestinian officials said. More than 500 rockets fired from Gaza have hit Israel, killing three people and injuring dozens.

Israel unleashed its massive air campaign on Wednesday, killing a leading militant of the Hamas Islamist group that controls Gaza and rejects Israel's existence, with the declared goal of deterring gunmen in the coastal enclave from launching rockets that have plagued its southern communities for years.

In the meantime, Israel is mustering thousands of soldiers and hundreds of tanks and armoured vehicles along the border, while the Egypt's president will today hold four-way talks with the Qatari emir, the prime minister of Turkey and Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in Cairo to discuss to Gaza crisis.

Obama in limbo over naming a new Spy Chief

The sudden vacation of CIA Spy Chief post by General Petraeus has put the american president Obama in limbo as there seems no perfect choice to select one from the long list of the eligible.

There is no single, slam-dunk choice for his former job, intelligence community insiders say. Some contenders have long ties to the agency but lack the throw-weight on Capitol Hill or a history with Obama’s tight-knit White House team. Others are wired on the Hill and at the White House but would have to win over the trust of the CIA’s executive corps and rank and file.

Still others might run into roadblocks in the confirmation process.

-->

“Given how [Petraeus] left, the first and single most important quality is someone who’s what I’d call bulletproof in terms of confirmation,” said Bush administration homeland security adviser Fran Townsend. “Not somebody who’s never been confirmed before or somebody who is in any way vulnerable to a confirmation fight … someone who has filled out all the forms and been through this process.”

Pressure mounts on Russia to end Syria stalemate at UN

Arab and Western states urged the U.N. Security Council to act swiftly on a resolution calling for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step aside as his forces reasserted control of Damascus suburbs on Tuesday after beating back rebels at the gates of the capital.

The comments appeared designed to confront Russia over its reluctance to support the resolution and condemn Assad’s government for its violent suppression of the protests. Moscow’s U.N. envoy, however, said consensus was necessary and possible, reports France24 quoting Reuters.

Euro hits fresh lows on debt fears

[ via Reuters ] 5 Jan

Nervousness about euro zone sovereign debt sent the single currency to a 15-month low and hit European stocks on Thursday, with the first French bond auction of 2012 seen as a test of recent efforts by policymakers to ease the region's crisis.

The price France has to pay to sell 7 to 8 billion euros of longer-term bonds will measure how much relief markets have taken from the EU leaders' December plan for resolving the crisis, and the near half-trillion euros subsequently pumped into the region's banks by the European Central Bank.

The economy hums in Germany - the euro crisis seems elsewhere

If Berlin's Alexa shopping center is any indication, Germany is having a very good crisis.
While the rest of Europe enacts crippling austerity measures to soothe nervous creditors and bring down dangerously high interest rates, shoppers continue to pour out of Alexa's doors with bags full of presents to sip mulled wine in the cheery Christmas market outside.

Fenja Kothe, a social worker juggling three shopping bags, said she and her countrymen felt no need to cut back on their purchases this holiday season.
"Germany seems to be in a much better position than a lot of other European countries," Kothe said, "so we don't worry about the crisis."

[ via Business Report ] 17 Dec

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said Friday he was hopeful that he would not need to ask Italians for further sacrifices and that he had “no doubt” Italy would be saved from the eurozone debt crisis.

Syria crisis: Russia circulates surprise UN resolution

[ via BBC News / Middle East ] 16 Dec

Russia has circulated a UN Security Council resolution aimed at ending the crisis in Syria, in a move that surprised the Western nations.

The draft condemns the violence by both Syria's government and the opposition, but does not mention sanctions.

Western diplomats said the current draft did not fully reflect the gravity of the human rights situation in Syria, but added that they would negotiate on the text. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that "there are some issues in it that we would not be able to support".

[ via BBC News / Busines ] 15 Dec

She said all nations, starting with Europe, needed to head off a crisis with risks of a global depression.

Lagards is qouted as saying:
"There is no economy in the world immune from the crisis that we not only see unfolding but escalating. It is going to be hopefully resolved by all countries, all regions actually taking action."

A new EU in the making - with Germany in charge

[ The New York Times ] 10 Dec
Europe’s worst financial crisis in generations is forging a new European Union, pushing Britain to the sidelines and creating a more integrated, fiscally disciplined core of nations under the auspices of a resurgent Germany.
New EU - less England
German Chancellor Angela Merkel persuaded every current member of the union except Britain to endorse a new agreement calling for tighter regional oversight of government spending. The accord, approved at a summit meeting in Brussels early on Friday, would allow the European Court of Justice to strike down a member’s laws if they violate fiscal discipline.

Election Fraud: Russia braces for nationwide protests

[ Al Jazeera ] 10 Dec

Russia is bracing itself for the first nationwide protest against Vladimir Putin's 12-year rule amid signs of swelling anger over a poll won by his ruling United Russia party with the alleged help of wide-scale fraud.

Moscow authorities gave permission for 30,000 people to gather on a square across the river from the Kremlin at 10:00 GMT after detaining some 1,600 activists over the past few days who joined unsanctioned rallies against the December 4 vote.

Putin has remained Russia's most popular and powerful politician as both president until 2008 and prime minister today - an image he has cultivated with tough talking against foreign powers and warm words for the Soviet past, says Al Jazeera.

The euro zone crisis: Same bed, different dreams

[ Reuters ] 6 Dec

Since the inception of the euro, France and Germany have pursued divergent visions of European economic and monetary union. In two decades, the French have become a little more German, the Germans a little more French. But the gulf remains, says Reuters.

With the fate of the 17-nation single currency at stake at a summit this week, 20 years almost to the day since the Maastricht summit at which European leaders agreed to merge their monies, the same battles are still being fought out.

Italy's Monti in austerity race

Full Story: Yahoo News 28 Nov

The newly elected Italian PM faces a testing week seeking to shore up Italy's strained public finances, with an IMF mission expected in Rome and market pressure building to a point where outside help may be needed to stem a full-scale debt emergency.

Monti is expected to unveil measures on December 5 that could include a revamped housing tax, a rise in sales tax and accelerated increases in the pension age. But pressure from the markets could force him to act more quickly.
