Famous Brands that may bid farewell in 2012 [Prediction ]

Competitive business is very cruel and pushing. When I was a child, we heard names like Pan Am, BOAC, Esso and likes - words no one even remembers today. Big giants vanish the market scene leaving no traces behind except in the archives. The battle of fittest and new alignments and arrangements continue in the corporate world. New names emerge while older one fade away.

Some of the probable good byes in 2012

Jim Edwards reports at Business Insider that the Wall Street Journal reported Kodak will file for bankruptcy while James R. Gregory, CEO of branding and market research firm CoreBrand, predicted that Kodak would "disappear" as a brand in 2012. Now Kodak is also a name that I heard since my childhood and its disappearance like Pan Am will take away yet another name from memory chip forever.

With these news the market scene for 2012 is unveiling - but this is yet the tip of the iceberg of predictions for the new year. There is lot more being predicted for 2012.

Will the year 2012 be an apocalyptic game-changer?

[ via LA Times ]

Amid a swirl of science, hucksterism and genuine spiritual belief, prognosticators say Dec. 21, 2012, will usher in a new era of nonviolence and sustainability or bring about TEOTWAWKI — survivalist shorthand for The End of the World As We Know It.

There are years that are remembered for changing the course of human history:1492. 1776. 1945, but rarely does a year arrive with such a mixture of anticipation and dread as 2012, predicts Mitchell Landsberg, Los Angeles Times.

"There are groups who claim that an uncharted, unseen planet called Nibiru will strike Earth or nearly hit it; that the Earth's polarity will reverse (so that north is south and south is north), wreaking widespread havoc; or that solar storms will destroy civilization by disrupting power grids. Most of the predictions are timed to coincide with the "end" of the Maya calendar on Dec. 21, the winter solstice."

Apple Planning Media-Related Event in the Big(ger) Apple This Month

[ via All Things D ] 2 Jan

Apple is planning an important — but not large-scale — event to be held in New York at the end of this month that will focus on a media-related announcement, says Kara Swisher at All Things D.
Per the usual caveat, the tech giant is well known for moving around their public show-and-tells, so this could certainly change at any moment.

a
But, for sure, several sources underscored that the event is not related to an upcoming version of the iPad 3, the next iteration of the popular tablet device that many expect to be available in 2012.

Markets Are Off To A Dynamite Start In 2012

[ via Business Insider ] 2 Jan

US markets start the year Tuesday, but Europe wasn't bothered by the fact that New Year's Day fell on a Sunday, thus depriving the people of a proper day off.
The big gainer? Germany's DAX index, which gained over 3%. A strong German manufacturing number helped out.

On the debt side of things, the Italian 10-year moved below 7% again, which is nice.
Short-term rates continue to fall in Europe as well.

2012 offers Very Few Reasons for Optimism

[ via Business Insider ] 28 Dec

As the year draws to a close, understandable confusion reigns in the minds of many investors. While short-term indicators, such as consumer confidence, appear to beckon recovery, the longer-term strategic issues remain shrouded in the smoke and mirrors of central bank monetary manipulation.

From the perspective of someone who has keenly observed global economics for more than a half century, I see little reason to believe that our economic morass will soon improve. Indeed, I do not believe we will see meaningful change until the Breton-Woods era of U.S. dollar dominated paper money finally comes to an end. In other words, our current experiment in unlimited monetary expansion will continue until it explodes, says John Browne at Business Insider

Browne is of the view:
  • American and European Union politicians have shown utter paralysis in tackling intractable economic problems
  • Banks are clearly not lending to small businesses, the vital source of economic recovery
  • The euro is so shrouded in doubt that investors are fleeing to the U.S. dollar and U.S. Treasuries as a safe haven

Unless major structural changes in fiscal policies are combined with sustained economic improvements, there is a significant likelihood that the euro will disintegrate in the coming years.
