First female law firm opens in Saudi Arabia

Good news for women in Saudi Arabia!!

Now the women of Saudi Arabia, which have generally been restricted to move about or even drive a car, have a window of opportunity to seek justice from a firm lead by women.

Just two months back, four women were granted granted licenses to practice law in the traditionally patriarchal kingdom.

Bayan Mahmoud Al Zahran is the the first Saudi woman lawyer who launched the female law firm in Jeddah.

Zahran told Arab News that her law firm is ready to fight for the rights of Saudi women and relate women’s cases to the court, a task which her male counterparts at times cannot understand or handle.

“I believe women lawyers can contribute a lot to the legal system. This law firm will make a difference in the history of court cases and female disputes in the Kingdom. I am very hopeful and thank everyone who supported me in taking this historical step,” Zahran said.

Piracy bill shelved in U.S

U.S. Senate and House leaders shelved Hollywood-backed anti-piracy legislation on Friday, days after a global online protest by Google Inc. and Wikipedia eroded congressional support.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid cancelled a Tuesday procedural vote on the Senate measure, the Protect IP Act, while House Judiciary Committee chairman Lamar Smith said his panel would postpone consideration of the House bill, the Stop Online Piracy Act. "There is no reason that the legitimate issues raised by many about this bill cannot be resolved," Reid said.

Obama Signs Defense Bill Despite 'Serious Reservations'

[ via Huffington Post ] 31 Dec

The last 'gift' to freemen, specially in USA was signed by the US president on 31 Dec 2011.

The indefinite military detention of Americans became the law of the land Saturday, as President Barack Obama signed a defense bill that codified that authority, even as he said he would not use it.

The signing on New Year's Eve as few people were paying attention angered civil liberties advocates, who argue that the law for the first time spells out certain measures that have not actually been tested all the way to the Supreme Court, including the possibility of detaining citizens in military custody without trial for as long as there is a war on terror.

Even the president, had reservations while signing the bill:
"I have signed this bill despite having serious reservations with certain provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation, and prosecution of suspected terrorists."

USA: Abortion, LGBT And Immigration Measures Set To Take Effect in 2012

[ via Huffington Post ] 29 Dec

Girls seeking abortions in New Hampshire must first tell their parents or a judge, employers in Alabama must verify new workers' U.S. residency, and California students will be the first in the country to receive mandatory lessons about the contributions of gays and lesbians under the set of state laws set to take effect at the start of 2012.
Many laws reflect the nation's concerns over immigration, the cost of government and the best way to protect and benefit young people, including regulations on sports concussions.
The laws have attracted mixed response from various segments of the society. For instance:
A California law will add gays and lesbians and people with disabilities to the list of social and ethnic groups whose contributions must be taught in history lessons in public schools. The law also bans teaching materials that reflect poorly on gays or particular religions.
Opponents have filed five potential initiatives to repeal the requirement outright or let parents remove their children while gays' contributions are being taught.

Read the full post by Huffington Post as the list of these laws, some very controversial, is too long to be mentioned here.
