Canada first nation to pull out of Kyoto protocol

Canada on Monday became the first country to announce it would withdraw from the Kyoto protocol on climate change, dealing a symbolic blow to the already troubled global treaty.


Canada, a major energy producer which critics complain is becoming a climate renegade, has long complained Kyoto is unworkable precisely because it excludes so many significant emitters.

Maldives 'Rubbish Island' is 'overwhelmed' by garbage

The government of the Maldives has temporarily banned the depositing of rubbish from its hotels onto an island used almost entirely as a garbage dump.
Thilafushi, an artificial island 7km (four miles) from the capital, is nicknamed Rubbish Island. An emergency clearing operation has begun to remove "hills of rubbish" mostly collected from luxury hotels.

Big emission emitters are real culprits


While the efforts are at hand to tell others to cap deadly emissions, it is in fact the "Tellers" that are the biggest culprits in the way of implementing emission control around the world.

It is China, USA and the EU which tops the list of biggest CO2 emitters. As the UN climate summit opens on Monday in Durban, South Africa, concerns are that those who top the list will make their utmost to stall any policy that might cap their emission and harm their "industrial growth."

Apple to polish its image in China


Apple, concerned over reports of spread of pollution by its Chinese manufacturers, has been meeting with the environment groups in China lately to polish its image. The move comes after a report in August alleged that some Apple manufacturers were discharging harmful pollutants.

Although Apple has refused to comment on the meeting, when contacted by BBC. "They explained a bit what they have been doing, which includes probes of 15 of their suppliers," Ma Jun, Director, told the BBC's Chinese service.

China, USA and India Top Polluters of Atmosphere

A report by US Department of Energy this week reveals China, USA and India re the top polluters of atmosphere by allowing emitting of harmful burning fossil fuels. Their emission saw a biggest ever jump in 2010 with China leading the list with an increase of 212 million metric tonnes of carbon in 2010 over 2009, compared to 59 million metric tonnes more from the United States and 48 million metric tonnes more from India.

While countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Russia, Poland and Kazakhstan have also shown an upward trend, countries including Switzerland, Azerbaijan, Slovakia, Spain, New Zealand and Pakistan have shown a downward trend.
