Indefinite Detention Bill No Longer Faces Veto Threat From White House

The White House on Wednesday abandoned its threat to veto a defense bill that sets in stone the commander in chief's authority to indefinitely detain terrorism suspects, including Americans, in military custody.

The White House had earlier threatned to veto the bill, but reversed course shortly before the House vote.

Gunshots near White House

Gunshots were fired near the White House on Friday night on Constitution Avenue in a confrontation between occupants in two vehicles, US federal law enforcement officers told The Washington Post.

The authorities added that US President Barack Obama and the first lady were not present in the White House when the incident took place.
