Finally the judgment day arrived. A court in Argentine jailed for life Alfredo Astiz, the infamous "Blond Angel of Death," and his 11 other military and police officials Wednesday in one of the country's biggest human right cases. The Blond, known for his cherubic looks was charged for holding 5,000 dissidents and torturing them during 1976-83 military rule. Only 200 of the 5,000 captives survived the torture.

The 22 month long trial listened to some 79 survivors who gave out gory details of their detention and torture at the hands of Alfredo Astiz and his death squad members. All 12 defendants were sentenced to life while four others were punished with between 18 and 25 years in jail. Specifically, Astiz was accused of participating in the disappearance, torture and murder of two French nuns, a journalist and three founders of a human rights group that he infiltrated while spying for the dictatorship.
The captives were detained at ESMA Naval Mechanics School, which has since 2007 been opened to the public as a human rights memorial.
