'Surplus' baby giraffe shot dead and fed to zoo lions [Video with Graphic Content]

Two years old healthy baby giraffe shot and fed to zoo lions

In a bizarre incident, a healthy baby giraffe was shot dead since it was 'surplus to zoo requirement' and fed to the lions at the Copenhagen Zoo.

The two years old baby giraffe Marius was not only shot dead but its autopsy carried out before the visitors, including many children, before being fed to the lions.

Young children stood at arm’s length as his carcass was skinned and dissected before the meat was thrown to the lions.




The incident occured despite huge public outcry and signing of an online petition by some 20,000 people.

The Danish zoo administration maintained that the drastic move was needed to combat inbreeding and insisted the display was educational. However, animal rights campaigners last night condemned the killing of Marius, saying it exposed the cruel reality of welfare even in Europe’s top zoos.
