5 Video Game Moments that Defined 2011

[ via Mashable ] 30 Dec

It seems like every single year is “the year of gaming,” if only because the genre keeps getting bigger and bigger. Everyone thought 2006 was going to be the high water mark with the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii all battling for supremacy. Then 2009 upped the ante with a rush of top-tier, high-selling games.

2011 was no slouch in terms of gaming. This year we caught a glimpse of the next generation of systems — portable and otherwise. Social networks entered mainstream games, motion gaming promised to further revolutionize how we play, mobile games proved they are here to stay and gamification showed that pretty much anything you do online can be turned into a video game.

Here are the five games that defined 2011:

  1. The Next Generation of Consoles
  2. Mobile Gaming is Here to Stay
  3. Battlefield Takes On Modern Warfare
  4. Motion Gaming
  5. Gamification

Asia stocks end 2011 sharply lower, Europe in focus

[ via Reuters ] 30 Dec

Asian stocks were poised to end their first losing year in three on Friday, having shed nearly a fifth of their value as Europe's debt crisis and financial turmoil took a toll on investors' risk appetite, driving them to safer assets such as the U.S. dollar and gold.

European stocks were set to edge higher on the last session of a dismal year that saw them tumble about 12 percent, while U.S. futures pointed to a weaker opening on Wall Street later in the day, with the S&P 500 looking set to end the year pretty close to where it began. .EU

Commodities such as crude oil and gold fared better this year. Brent crude is set to end the year up nearly 14 percent and at a record high annual average, as political tensions in OPEC member states help negate a global economic slowdown that has dampened oil demand growth.

The oil market will end 2011 the same way it started, with fears of a major oil supply disruption in the Middle East and North Africa supporting prices and the uncertainty is expected to continue into the new year as well.

Top quirky stories of 2011

[ via LA Times ] 29 Dec

Be it the macabre mummified remains of a Playboy playmate or the odd sentence of the avocado thief, Californians were prominently featured in some of 2011's quirkiest stories.
It wasn't a Michael Bay movie, but for Westside residents the closure of the 405 Freeway for an entire weekend was expected to be a disaster, and was dubbed "Carmageddon." Some, however, took advantage of the closure. Stephen Estes, 23 , looked at the empty 405 Freeway as an invitation to start "planking." Basically, Estes made like a board and lay down on the freeway in a type of craze whose latest incarnation is "Tebowing."
Los Angeles Times have compiled a list of some of our favorites from L.A.

The killing fields of 2011 in Photographs

I wonder why the world is becoming more violent and deadly with the passage of each day of our lives. I wanted to find a collection of the Best Photos of 2011 - but was appalled to find blood stained and soaked photographs everywhere. It looks as if the world has become a killing field rather than a planet of hope and peace.

WARNING: SOME IMAGES CONTAIN GRAPHIC CONTENT OR NUDITY From the uprisings across the Arab world to the devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan, there was no lack of news in 2011. Reuters photographers covered the breaking news events as well as captured more intimate, personal stories. In this showcase, the photographers offer a behind the scenes account of the images that helped define the year.

I am sharing just a few less graphic photos of 2011 - which by the science and art of photography can be rated as the best. But if we view these as human beings, these leave us much to ponder.

For rest of the many more photos, see the slide show at: Reuters.

One of the great things about Top 10 advertising lists that are based on what consumers actually watched, as opposed to the lazy judgments of know-nothing critics, is how surprising they are.

Forced to guess ahead of time, you might think that Apple's first ad for the iPhone 4S featuring Siri would have been one of the top YouTube ads of the year -- but it's waaaay down the list. Even Smartwater's contrived Jennifer Aniston viral video beat Apple.

T-Mobile "Royal Wedding"
  • Adidas D Rose: adiZero Rose 2: "The Bull"
  • Samsung: "Unleash Your Fingers"
  • Apple: "Introducing Siri on iPhone 4S"
  • Old Spice: "Scent Vacation"
  • Hot Wheels: "The Yellow Driver's World Record Jump"

5 Biggest Mobile Stories Of 2011

2011 was another crazy year in the mobile industry. The industry was rife with action, growth, progress, conflict, winners, and losers. We saw the birth of the Android tablet; the rebirth of the Android, iOS, and Windows Phone platforms; the death of webOS-based phones and tablets; the failed AT&T-T-Mobile merger; and all sorts of industry records for apps, downloads, sales, and much, much more.
Boiling an entire year's worth of industry events into a single post doesn't do justice to the accomplishments contributed by all of the people involved, but there were five stories that stood above the rest in scale and importance to the industry. Here they are.

  1. Android domination
  2. AT&T/T-Mobile merger
  3. Good tablets, bad tablets, ugly tablets
  4. Four-G fight
  5. iPhone 5
