Egyptian President Morsi agrees to limit controversial new powers

Egypt's president has agreed to limit the use of his sweeping new powers to "sovereign matters" after extensive talks with the country's top judges.
Mohamed Morsi sparked violent protests last week by decreeing all of his decisions free from judicial review and banning courts from dissolving the Islamist-dominated body writing the country's new constitution.

Mr Morsi held five hours of crisis talks overnight with members of Egypt's highest judicial body, the Supreme Judicial Council, in an attempt to resolve the crisis.
A presidential spokesman said although no changes were made to the constitutional decree, its scope would be limited to sovereign matters.

Israel 'insult to all humanity' - says Iranian President

Israel's existence is an "insult to all humanity," Iran's president said on Friday in one of his sharpest attacks yet against the Jewish state, as Israel openly debates whether to attack Iran over its nuclear program.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said confronting Israel is an effort to "protect the dignity of all human beings."
"The existence of the Zionist regime is an insult to all humanity," Ahmadinejad said. He was addressing worshippers at Tehran University after nationwide pro-Palestinian rallies, an annual event marking Quds (Jerusalem) Day on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.
Israel considers Iran an existential threat because of its nuclear and missile programs, support for radical anti-Israel groups on its borders and repeated references by Iranian leaders to Israel's destruction. Ahmadinejad himself has repeatedly made such calls, as has Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Morsi takes Egypt helm - military pledges support

Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi began his first full day in office on Sunday with his powers circumscribed by the military as he tries to pick a new cabinet to carry out his campaign pledges.

After being sworn in as the country's first freely elected civilian president on Saturday, Morsi formally received a transfer of power and pledge of support from the military.
But the 60-year-old's swearing-in ceremony took place at the constitutional court in Cairo, despite Morsi's wish that it take place before the now disbanded Islamist-led parliament.

Muslim Brotherhood’s Morsy wins Egyptian presidency

Mohamed Morsy of the Muslim Brotherhood was declared Egypt’s first democratic president on Sunday by the state election committee, which said he had defeated former general Ahmed Shafik with 51.7 percent of last weekend’s run-off vote.

He succeeds Hosni Mubarak, who was overthrown 16 months ago after a popular uprising. The military council which has ruled the biggest Arab nation since then has this month curbed the powers of the presidency, meaning the head of state will have to work closely with the army on a planned democratic constitution.

Thousands of Brotherhood supporters burst into cheers on Cairo’s Tahrir Square, waving national flags, setting off fireworks and chanting “Allahu Akbar!” or God is Great, greeting a dramatic victory, tempered by the army’s continuing role. “Say! Don’t fear! The military must go!” crowds chanted.

Is Egypt's Mubarak dead?

There have been conflicting news circulating around the world about the death of Egypt's ousted president president Hosni Mubarak.

General Said Abbas, a member of the ruling military council, told Reuters, that Mubarak had suffered a stroke but added: “Any talk of him being clinically dead is nonsense.”

South Africa's president Jacob Zuma about to marry for the sixth time

Good times for the world's most prominent polygamist: South Africa's president Jacob Zuma is about to marry for the sixth time.
The presidential team's take on the event seems fairly low-key, and not just because they've been through it all five times before.
The wedding is just "formalizing" the relationship, a spokesman says: long-term fiancée Gloria Bongi Ngema already shares First Lady-like duties, such as accompanying the president on official trips, with Mr Zuma's three other current wives.

President of Hungary resigns over claims of plagiarism in doctoral thesis

The president of Hungary, Pal Schmitt, resigned from his largely ceremonial post yesterday amid a storm of criticism over what he called “unfounded allegations” of plagiarism in his 1992 doctoral thesis.
His resignation followed days of political turmoil after the university in Budapest that awarded his doctoral degree stripped it from him last week.
“Based on Hungary’s constitution, which I have signed, the president expresses national unity,” Mr Schmitt told parliament. “In this situation when my personal issue divides my beloved nation rather than unites it, I feel it is my duty to end my service and resign my mandate as president.”

Breaking News: Putin elected Russian President

Amid reports of widespread violations, with many people voting more than once, Vladimir Putin has been elected Russian president for the third time, exit polls suggest, after spending the last four years as the country's PM.

The exit polls gave Mr Putin about 60% of the vote, meaning that he should avoid a run-off with his nearest rival, Communist Gennady Zyuganov.

Officials say turnout was higher than for the last election in 2008.
