While Europe is engrossed into its debt crisis, Africa is engrossed in civil wars and Thailand trying to stop the massive onslaught of flood water, a great game is going on in Tajikistan by its neighbours to win over Tajik heart.
It all started with India taking a lead, though not sharing common border with Tajikistan, by renovating an old Russian-time airbase not far from Afghanistan. This prompted Pakistan to announce a $25 million, 220 kilometer road linking Pakistan with Tajikistan, through the famous Wakhan strip in Afghan territory. Pakistan is the only country through which this Central Asian State could do business with the outer world and reach warm waters of Arabian Sea.
The Chinese, who recently built roads to Tajikistan from east, told Dushanbe there is no hurry to pay off their $1 billion foreign debt to Beijing. Not to be left behind, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has announced that the two countries had agreed to a 49-year renewal on leases for three bases that house Moscow’s 201st Motorized Division.
Not mentioning Iran, the not very far away neighbour, will leave out an important player of the region. Iran's President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad too flew into Dushanbe last month, and he and President Rahmon inaugurated a new hydroelectric plant, and signed accords for Iran to build a second one.
