Although Wheldon was twice IndyCar champion, many in Britain knew less of him since Formula 1 figures more predominantly in the UK than a fierce race in the USA. But after his tragic death, there were headlines across the entire England to mourn a British who had long since been in USA making his presence felt there. A winner of eight British karting titles after taking up the pursuit as a 4-year-old, Wheldon left Emberton for the U.S. in 1999 after failing to secure financial backing for his career in Europe. His father remembered his son in an emotional speech Monday outside the family home in the village of Emberton and said, "Daniel was born to be a racer and yesterday left us doing what he loved to do."
