Man ditches aircraft in sea after running our of gas

Full Story: CNN

If one runs out of gas whine driving on land, one can always find help - but what do yo do when flying an aircraft? The answer is ditch the aircraft into sea. This is what a 65 years old man flying a Cessna 310 from Monterey, California to Hilo did when he ran out of gas 100 miles short of the island on Friday night. He was rescued by the Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, though the plane could not be salvaged. The accident is a sheer miscaluclation of distance and aircraft's endurance as Hilo is about 2,300 miles west of Monterey, while the maximum range of Cessna 310 aircraft with full fuel is up to 1955 miles. Read the full story and watch a video clip showing the small aircraft ditching into water and the pilot being rescued by Coast Guard helicopter.
