A study has concluded that an earthquake can generate ripples in the ionosphere before it actually hits the earth. The study has been carried out by geodesist and geophysicist Kosuke Heki at Hokkaido University, who studied very closely the massive earthquake of 9.0 at the Richter scale that jolted Japan early this year. His research is based on analyzing data from over 1,000 GPS receivers and has discovered that disruptions of the electrically charged particles in the ionosphere caused measurable anomalies in radio signals between satellites and ground receivers.
