Miss Venezuela, Ivian Sarcos, has been crowned as the 2011 Miss World beauty pageant on Sunday in London.
Clad in glistering pink with diamante studs, the 22-year-old had the crown placed on her head by Alexandria Mills of the United States, the Miss World for year 2010.
Miss Philippines, Gwendoline Ruais, was named the runner-up, while Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Perez, came third in the contest, which was back in its home city to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
Although the show was a big success and a large audience applauded the contestants and the new queen, there were some 50 feminists who staged a demonstration outside the venue, waving placards reading “Objectification won’t achieve world peace”, “Being a woman is not a competition” and “Sexism is pretty ugly”.
