The demand for the Tokay Gecko has soared recently after it was claimed by study that the lizard's tongue and internal organs are a cure for HIV, TRAFFIC Southeast Asia said in a report. With this unprecedented increase in demand, there is a danger of extinction of this nocturnal Asian lizard.

However, the claim of AIDS cure is yet to be confirmed. In fact TRAFFIC says such claims are unfounded and "indicative of an elaborate hoax." The Philippines' government in July also warned that using geckos to treat AIDS and impotence may put patients at risk.
