Africa Cup of Nations football semis halted because of troubled crowd

Although hosts Ghana won the semi final of the Africa Cup of Nations football yesterday against Equatorial Guinea 3-0, the match was halted for some thirty minutes due to a rowdy home crowd.

The semi final being played in the city of Malabo had the Ghana fans massed behind a goal after 82 minutes of the game to seek refuge from missiles being thrown at them.

Bottles rained down as police battled to gain control, while a helicopter hovered over the stadium.

Play was stopped as bottles continued to be thrown by the home supporters, littering the running track around the pitch. Chairs were also thrown after being ripped from the stands.
