Hordes of 'displaced' rats swarming New York

Although the Superstorm Sandy is long gone an d life is returning to normal in New York, there hordes of unwanted guests that are looking for new residences.

Not displaced person due to the storm, but hordes of rats that are fleeing the flood zone and taking up residence in buildings that were previously rat-free.

For some city officials, the last straw came a week ago when a rodent problem forced a two-day closure of Magnolia Bakery, a Manhattan landmark often credited with starting a national cupcake craze. Within days, a city councilwoman floated a proposal to create a $500,000 emergency rat mitigation program for storm-impacted neighborhoods.

While the city's health department, which collects reams of data about the rat population and maps infestations looking for trends, said rodent complaints actually had declined since the late October storm, which was spawned when Hurricane Sandy merged with two other weather systems, the reality on ground is much different.

TV stations and newspapers have been rife with reports about rats infesting parked cars and fleeing the East River waterfront for the brownstones of Brooklyn Heights and exterminators enjoying a boom in business.

Hundreds of NY homes considered safety hazard to be demolished after Sandy

Some 200 houses in the New York boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island that were hardest hit by last month's mammoth confluence of a hurricane and a seasonal "nor'easter" storm are to be demolished in the coming weeks or months.

-->

That's on top of the 200 or so that were already to be bulldozed after being completely or partially destroyed by wind, water or by storm-sparked fire.

New York City's Buildings Department must still issue a ruling on another 500 damaged structures, some of which could also meet the same fate, its director Robert LiMandri told the New York Times.

'Frankenstorm' Sandy' hits US Coasts, cripples life

Hurricane Sandy, owing to its ferocity labeled as Frankenstorm has began to batter the densely populated East Coast, shutting down schools, business centers amid fears of large scale destruction and deaths.

Some even fear Sandy to be deadlier than the Galveston storm that hit USA in 1990, leaving behind thousands dead. Today the port city, which was once the wealthiest city of America  stands in ruins even after years of the disaster.

However, the deadliest ever cyclone 'Bhola' hat hit anywhere in the word was the one that hit East Pakistan, as per the 2008 MSNBC report, on 12 November 1970. The cyclone and its aftermath killed more than 500,000.

The fully charged Sandy is battering the US east cost where people have yet to take the hurricane seriously. 12 inches of rain is also expected along the coast line cities.

As of now, almost 6,000 flights have been cancelled, leaving thousands of would be passengers on airports around the world bounded for the storm affected areas. In the meanwhile, Sandy fears has forced closure of JFK and LaGuardia airports in New York and Newark in New Jersey till further notice, while Amtrak has cancelled all services in the north-east Tuesday, today.

-->

The flight cancellations may lead to havoc which would create gridlock in the U.S. aviation system and create a backlog of stranded passengers. It is feared that losses may surpass $ 20 billion due to Sandy.

Hurricane Sandy grounds thousands of flights

Hurricane Sandy grounded thousands of flights in the U.S. northeast Monday and upended travel plans across the globe, stranding passengers from Hong Kong to Europe. The massive storm threatens to bring a near halt to air travel for at least two days in a key region for both domestic and international flights.

Major carriers such as American Airlines, JetBlue and Delta planned to cancel all flights into and out of three area airports in New York, the nation's busiest airspace. According to the flight-tracking service FlightAware, nearly 7,500 flights had been cancelled for Sunday and Monday. Both Philadelphia International Airport and Newark International Airport, a hub for United Airlines, each had more than 1,200 cancellations for the two days.

-->

Delays rippled across the U.S., affecting travellers in cities such as San Francisco to Chicago, and disruptions spread to Europe and Asia, where airlines cancelled or delayed flights to New York and Washington from cities that are major travel hubs including Berlin, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

[ via Huffington Post ] 4 Jan
Actress Ellen Barkin tweeted early Sunday morning that she was shoved to the ground by a New York City police officer as she was walking near her apartment on 13th street and 6th avenue. This prompted an uproar on Twitter.

"Just threatened on my street by NYPD,cop shoved me,both hands,onto sidewalk..Is it a crime 2 stand in the street in NY?WTF is going on here?" the "Another Happy Day" star wrote over the social networking service. A few hours later, Barkin wrote that she was shoved by police as she was trying to help a girl who was being arrested.

"I was trying 2 make my way 2 young girl they had thrown in2 the van.She was not a protester.Was not drunk.She was walking home," she wrote.

But as for now: Barkin clarified on Twitter that she was not shoved to the ground, just jostled by police officers as she tried to help a protester being arrested.

It now remains to be seen why she elected to make the first statement and then what made her change mind?
