New Zealand could be struck by devastating 9.0 earthquakes

A long dormant earthquake faultline that has come alive could have devastating effect on New Zealand and can reduce it to rubbles within minutes.

Geologists warn that with the movement of Hikurangi subduction zone, an earthquake to the tune of 9.0 magnitude may result into a deadly tsunami that may not give a few minutes for the residents to flee to safety.

The trench runs offshore from the top of the South Island to Gisborne in the north. Scientists claim the 2011 Japan earthquake is a similar example of destruction.

Watch a documenttary below to understand the Hikurangi subduction zone and its resultant destruction:

Body of Mysterious 30 foot long 'Sea Monster' Found Washed up on New Zealand Beach

The rotting carcass of a mysterious-looking ' 30 feet long sea monster' has been found washed ashore on a New Zealand beach. The beast washed ashore in the Bay of Plenty after violent storms hit the coast of New Zealand

Watch the video below

Photos made available from a YouTube clip show the half-buried head of the carcass with jagged teeth and gaping jaws.  Most of the rest of the creature's body is missing.

No one is really sure what this creature actually is - however some suggest it to be a saltwater crocodile, a giant moray eel, a dolphin or a DINOSAUR.

However, marine mammal expert Anton van Helden rejected all these ideas and told New Zealand's Channel 3 that the creature's fin structure is similar to that of a killer whale.

Hobbit mania grips New Zealand

Hobbit mania erupted in New Zealand's capital for the world premiere of Peter Jackson's new trilogy.

The first of the three movies - prequels to the Lord of the Rings trilogy - was shown at Wellington's Embassy Theater on Wednesday evening.

Stars flew in for the event, which saw Wellington rebranded as "the Middle of Middle Earth".

Tens of thousands of fans - some in costume - gathered around the theatre for the screening. Some camped overnight to secure spots close to the 500m-long red carpet that led to the theatre, which was decorated to look like the entrance to a Hobbit house.

New Zealand expects a tourism boost from the trilogy.

New Zealand's Mount Tongariro erupts after more than a century

A MINOR earthquake has scientists closely monitoring a New Zealand volcano that erupted for the first time in more than a century Tuesday.

Steam spills from Mt Tongariro. Picture: Hagen Hopkins

The steam-triggered eruption late Monday of Mount Tongariro on New Zealand's North Island sent boulders flying, covered surrounding areas in ash and disrupted domestic flights.

Scientists were able to fly over the area for the first time today. Volcanologist Steve Sherburn says it appears the eruption blew three new holes in the north side of the mountain, including one about the size of a house. He says it's not yet clear what to expect next from the volcano, which continues to vent steam.

Five couples and pilot dead as hot air balloon crashes in New Zealand

[ via Mail Online ] 7 Jan

New Zealand Police said five couples and the pilot were killed when the hot air balloon crashed near Wellington in an area that is popular with overseas tourists.

On the other hand British authorities are investigating whether any UK tourists were on board a hot air balloon which crashed in flames in New Zealand, killing all 11 people on board.

Local Mayor Ron Mark said those on board were a mix of local people and tourists. Early reports suggested a fire had started in the basket, causing the canopy to ignite, resulting in the apparatus plunging to the ground in flames, giving no hope for those on board.

One witness said that amid screams from those in the basket, two of the passengers had jumped out to avoid the flames as it plunged.

Strong earthquake hits Christchurch

[ via Dawn News ] 23 Dec

A series of strong earthquakes struck the New Zealand city of Christchurch on Friday, rattling buildings, sending goods tumbling from shelves and prompting terrified holiday shoppers to flee into the streets.

The first 5.8-magnitude quake struck Friday afternoon, 16 miles (26 kilometers) north of Christchurch and 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) deep, the US Geological Survey said. Minutes later, a 5.3-magnitude aftershock hit. About an hour after that, the city was shaken by another 5.8-magnitude temblor, the USGS said, though New Zealand’s geological agency GNS Science recorded that aftershock as a magnitude-6.0. Both aftershocks were less than 3 miles (5 kilometers) deep.
