Oil spill in NZ turning into a major marine disaster

The oil tanker, Rena, which ran aground on the  Astrolabe Reef off the port of Tauranga , is spilling oil which is likely to reach New Zealand beaches, says NZ official. already the colossal damage to marine life is being termed as the biggest marine disaster ever in NZ history. There had been fears the bad weather might break up the ship, leaking all of the 1,700 tonnes of heavy fuel oil the ship is believed to be carrying and spilling its containers into the sea.
