IceBridge, a group of NASA scientists and technicians who analyze the changes in ice sheets covering Antarctica and Greenland since 2009 has found a large crack in Pine Island Glacier. Scientists estimate that the break will increase, causing an iceberg about 880 km ² is separated.
A press statement by IceBridge project leader reported:
"In the flight observed a large crack that indicates that a large piece of ice is about to leave. It is a crack 280 meters wide and 60 feet deep, higher than the Statue of Liberty. "
